Painting and rust
A few years ago I found rust under the front roof rail covers, just after the windscreen. I sanded down and repainted.
The rust has come back through the paint and I was intending this year to get it professionally done, but having been made redundant in February then Covid came along, I'm going to have to be careful with money until another job is found (not an easy concept as the job market has probably now completely changed). So now I'm going to have to patch it up again myself.
So whats the secret to succesful filling and painting to ensure that rust doesn't come back?

I agree with DM.
Not strictly necessary, but I think self etching primer over bare metal is more effective than high build. If you are going to use filler apply that to clean bare metal. Do not use filler over self etch primer, unless appearance is unimportant.Chris

So filler then primer, rather than primer then filler? Is this the case if using normal primer?

This the red line indeed... back to bare metal; you can buy a blast gun with rubber nozzle to blast a very small spot and without damaging the surrounding paint. You can Even do that with baking soda
Not very expensive (A few tenner) for such a gun but you need to Use a compressor...
Blast gun, Like this one:
Then apply the rust converter and then apply the layers of primer and paint.
If you get sloppy on the bare metal part?, next year you can do it againBest regards
