P0403-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation control circuit

Hi Guys,

Hoping there’s still a large D3 community on here… I need some help interpreting a fault code:
P0403-00 (2F) Exhaust gas recirculation control circuit
What is the control circuit and what can I do to fix it?!!
The car is running like :censored: and struggles to get above 50mph. It is particularly bad in the cold. My EGR valves are both newish but when I watch the live values, it appears only the offside valve is operating. The near side valve was only changed recently (because I had one in the shed and lockdown!) but the fault code was coming up prior to this. I’ve had the MAP sensor off and cleaned it as far as I dare without poking anything into the hole!
Any advice?

blank the side you think is faulty or both !
You can use 2p coins or shims off ebay.

The control circuit is the position feed back I expect

Driving it with an EGR jammed open is not advised, hot gases into plastic inlet manifold etc.

 how would one know if it is fully open or fully closed??! IID shows 5% from memory.

If jammed shut I would say performance would be unchanged but on EU4 engines and later you get an engine light either due to low flow or position feedback.

If jammed open it'll be a Censored to start, be completely gutless until about 2k and on EU4 you'll get an engine light and position feedback code.

This all from my very limited experience.

I figured something can’t be 5% closed! Reluctantly admitting it is time to blank!

Ok so just checked: near side reads 5% at idle, no change during shut down cycle. Offside also currently showing 5% at idle but fluctuates from 0% through 100% on shut down cycle. Can’t work out how to order position change with IID at the mo… hmm. No other engine related fault codes. Incidentally it idles nice and smoothly, but runs like :censored: when driving. Have ordered a blanking kit anyway.

In my case 5% is closed and 95% is open. The range is 5%-95%, at the start and the shutdown of yhe engine both valves cycle through these values, if no movement is detected, the error is pop and ligbt is on ( also if values goes outside of that range - for example if you fit the egr solenoid without the the valve itself Whistle )

When one valve does not move or is faulty, both valves stop working in their current setting. (I.e. values wont change)

As said before, easy fix/diag if the valve is open is the emergency blanking.

Or connect an external working valve to trick the system and recheck the values Wink

Different Discovery behave different.

In my case (my Disco 07 HSE EUR4) the blanking does not throw any error (i assume i do not have pressure sensors for each egr) but if the egr itself is failing and error pops.

Is that what you asked?

Check also the live values of the throttle body, in my case it is 11%. You error could be that too.

Forgot to ask, does it make any difference when the engine is up to temperature??

Thanks Prette. Mine is MY05. Wonder if that makes any difference. I’ll check some readings again later on at idle and in motion. Confused why it’s running so rough if both valves are showing 5% closed… it has effectively blanked itself hasn’t it?! Or maybe I’m looking in completely the wrong place and my problem isn’t egr related… but one would expect a fault code surely?? Big Cry

Definitely more of a problem in the cold. Ran ok-ish in the autumn with same fault code. It runs much better at temperature but it still isn’t right. Put my foot down to make an overtake and it throws up an engine system fault and goes into limp mode until it drops down to about 15mph and then picks up again.
