Oztent RV5

Had my RV5 for about 6 months now and feel I can now give a more informed feedback..

Firstly, it's heavy. Damned heavy. A real mission to get on and off the roof of my disco3. (has to go on the roof as it's so long).

Secondly, it is sold as a "30 second tent". Obviously this is rubbish as the main tent can, theoretically, be put up in 30 seconds, but then you have to put the poles in, peg it out, add the sides, adjust it so the sides fit, add the side extension, adjust it, peg it out, add the fly, peg it out, blah blah blah..

So not really 30 seconds at all. No more or less really than any number of pop up tents and/or inflatable tents in fact..

The bedroom is enormous - this is a major plus point and SWMBO loves it. In fact, it's the only reason I still have it I'm afraid.

Overall, I'm not exactly loving it. The only really redeaming feature seems to be that they hold their value extremely well, which is brilliant when you want to shift them on!

Very Happy

As soon as Tufftrek have got their oztent look-a-like that is in lighter material for about half the price sorted (only do about an RV2 size - waiting for RV4/5 size to come out) then this one and it's bits will be shifted.

Thumbs Up

Spot on summary 👍 and would only add that after a night of gale force strong winds made my mind up decisevely to move on from the Oztent set up. All your comments are relevant to why i and a few others moved to a Tentipi set up👍

It's not as deep as the RV2 but it is taller at 205cm. It's massively bigger than the RV1 though.

Trouble is, as soon as it gets to the same size as an RV4/5 it's going to be a similar weight.

Isn't it a lighter, more traditional, tent material?

The one I saw at AOC last year was - I'm pretty sure...

This year I am going with a RTT on a Sankey trailer with pop up tents for the bins where required - or may be the oztent, depending on how we feel and where we are.

Considering an RV5 tag-a-long actually and attaching to my direct4x4 awning

I think it's a fair summary but wonder how much heavier the RV5 is to my RV3.

It will only fit on the roof but I can lift mine on and off myself without any real drama, especially if I left the end onto the rack from the back of the vehicle and just slide it along.

I used mine in a storm on the Isle of Mull which caused damage to trees and property and despite flapping like hell not one peg was lifted nor any pole or frame piece bent. I've also used it in storm conditions atop a hill in Shropshire overnight with much noise but no damage. Maybe I've been lucky.

I would say condensation is bad unless you vent it which makes it too cold in winter conditions. Similarly the 'stand up' height is good and comfortable but also makes it a much larger space and therefore colder in winter.

The supplied bag is too small for easy repacking and should be a few inches bigger. I plan to buy an RV5 bag and put everything in it.

I agree that buy the time you've added all the usual bits on it's not a quick tent to put up. But it's no slower than my mate's tentipi and far quicker than the Coleman fibreglass pole jobbie I had before which took about half an hour to put up and take down.

Quickest "family" tent I have had is the Quechua Base Seconds:

I paid £200 for it 6/7 years ago and sold it about a year ago for... £200!

This is because they stopped making them and they are very very desirable.

Bedrooms not big mind! Thumbs Up

I think mine is the 4.0.

They were about £160, brought it in a decathlon sale for £40, one of the best tents I have brought, love the two doors and opening screens, perfect for warmer climates Thumbs Up
