Overheating Mont Blanc Alps

On one of our pan Europa Tours in summer 2023 we sailed down France had a night in Tours and a lovely dinner and headed to Chamonix in the French Alps had a day and an evening there and then headed of for the Mont Blanc Tunnel to get to Genoa for a 3 day stay then on to the South of France and then Northern Spain Bigur area 4 up in the car. Usually 6 or even 7 on these trips.
We drove around Cham in the day in was 37 degrees, on the way to the tunnel we had full Christmas Trees lights etc (I had had the dash display replaced before we left so thought it was Land Rover Gremlins.
I reset everything and all seemed OK, it wasn't !!! Got to entrance to tunnel massive over heat thought that was the end of her !! Was already dreaming of my new 4 or even 5.
Lots of family arguments and stress eventually got through to AA and they pulled us off the motorway to a garage. Lovely women at Garage said they could not look at the car for 2 weeks as it was August. Always a problem in Europe they where open but crazy busy could not even take a look.
She said it's probs just overheated it happens here.
AA where not brilliant but came through sort of in the end first said they could organise a 7 seater hire for us no problem then said they couldn't even get us a mini you will have to try to get a car yourself.
Thanks AA they will though pay for a Hotel and first 3 days of hire so not actually that bad but you have to sort and pay for it all yourself and claim it back.
We found a hotel put some coolant in the car and drove to the Hotel a few miles in the car 4 up
We managed to hire a Kia Sportage from a place in Salonce. Which was about 20km away we chanced it in the Disco and got there OK. Not having a 7 seater was not a problem until we got to Spain where we met up with my youngest daughter and her fiancé who had flown in and my sister and her husband and daughter.
The Kia was fast and great on fuel but not a Disco missed the space and the height especially on MWay in rain.
We had a great time in Genoa I would recommend to anyone great food drink sea and culture.
We headed off in massive storm across France from Italy to Spain in a day it's a long way we originally wanted a night in Cannes or Antibes but we had lost a day in Chamonix and had to get to our booking in a lovely old convent in Bigur Spain, the temperatures thank God had gine down to 24 25 degrees after the storm.
We had a lovely time in Spain my Wife and one of my Daughters decided to fly home from there and the AA actually paid for the flights which was very good.
My son and I returned to Chamonix in the Kia stopping in Annecy for a night on the way up which was actually a lovely place.
We had left the Disco at a Land Rover Specialist in Salonce who was actually closed for the Holidays but sent us a message saying they did not work on Discoveries only Defenders but it was OK to leave the car there they where lovely people who had some amazing defenders.
My son and I decided to put some coolant in and drive the car back to the Ferry (no tunnel bookings available) we took it easy at first and soon realised she seemed to be driving fine.
We got to Calais in one hit and it's a long way we booked on the 8.30 boat where there in plenty of time straight through French Customs and then faced a 1 to 2 hour delay on UK customs work to rule !! Nuts ! We finally got on the boat around 11.30 and sailed at 12 got into my daughter's house in Hampstead at 2.39 UK (3.39 in our heads) forgot to fold the mirrors in as she lives in a tight street and woke up to passengers wing mirror hanging off. But we where back some gaffer tape sorted it.
Stayed the weekend and headed back to Ormskirk with no hiccups and the 2 other passengers back in board my wife and daughter had flown into Gatwick so all ended well.
Took the car to garage nothing they could find wrong with it !!
Dilemma I have now is my wife will not leave the UK in it because we can't fix what we can not find.
Did it simply overheat ??. Is that a thing ?? We have probs done 5 to 6k faultless miles in it since ! It's on 223000 now.
My youngest Daughter is getting married in Croatia and I want to drive there with the Dress etc etc My Wife is flying.
What could of been wrong that fixed itself ?? Iam looking at cars for 20k that do the same thing don't go any faster and use the same amount of fuel or more !!! They might be ULEZ but spending 20k to save £300 to £400 pounds a year is ridiculous.
The only thing wrong with the cooling system is it displays coolant low all the time (5yrs) could the float of blocked water flow ?? How did it unblock itself if it did.
I would love any feedback or ideas anyone has as I actually think we could of continued the whole journey to France and Spain the next day.
Is overheating and being fine when it's cooked down really a thing.

Brief synopsis:

Your display was showing 'low coolant warning' for c. three or four years before car actually overheated, so maybe by that time the coolant was actually low and not just crying wolf- esp in 37 degrees. (The display on our D4 regularly flashes the same warning even though the tank and float have been replaced twice).

Have you monitored coolant levels since then?

I would do a full cooling system overhaul, radiator, waterpump, coolant outlets, thermostat and replaces the hoses or at the least check them all for condition.
I was towing my 17ft caravan last weekend and the temps were 36/37/38/36 over the 4 days we were away without any issue.
