Opinion sought on 2 issues: Aux Tensioners & ARB bushes?

Hi,

Hoping for an opinion on 2 maintenance issues ('06 S, 86k miles):

1. Squeal at 2-2.5k rpm when engine loaded (Driving up mountain)

I never get this under typical driving condition even at the same RPM (I usually shift @ 2k...) but there is a clear shrill squeal developing at the 2-2.5k+ rev range when climbing a steep hill. Tried aircon on/off and noise still there. Is this Aux belt tensioners? If so, what else is prudent to change as part of this job?

2. Clunks from the rear

I can't take the noise any more.... I have a feeling I could probably address this by changing rear drop links and ARB bushes. Does this sound plausible or could it be something else? Again what else to change as part of this job?

Thanks!

Andy

The clunking could be something else (bushes in the arms) than ARB bushes but the latter are relatively easy and cheap to change. Assuming bolts aren’t rusted, that is. If you’re changing rear ARB bushes you could change the ones in the front, too, at the same time. Chances are they’re either originals or have been replaced at the same time previously. I had the same (“clunking in the rear and front”) and got rid of it by doing this.

When you have wheels off you can test whether the drop-links need changing by tugging on them hard.

Can’t help you with the squeal, sorry. Whistle

I would bet the squeal is a boost air leak and as you up the rpms it becomes audible, search for split intercooler hose.

Why do you shift at 2k? its a diesel work it and occassionally work it bloody hard, ie thrash it.

I'm inclined to discount boost leak. 18 months ago it got a new stock (stupid decision...) intercooler and 4 ply silicone hoses. However, I did not of course change the short pipe... I don't get the noise at the same RPM on the flat - is there science that would link that to boost?

Hm! I would check the idler pulleys for the squeak. The clunk could be the prop shaft uni joints.

Boost is related more to load than speed, so at the same speed climbing a hill, relative to a flat road there will be more boost to up the power.
