Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

See your point Adam,
Maybe it's just me being over cautious then, but it's commonly done and makes sense to me.

It's a very interesting point thou, probably worthy of a bit of discussion and debate Wink

After all everyone has heard the horror stories of cloned vehicles and suddenly getting parking tickets from places you never went.

I wonder just how much information can actually be obtained from a picture with a visible reg plate.

I think you can get from a reg plate number to a VIN and full vehicle configuration with Microcat for example.
I don't know what a HPI check gives you?

I guess the registered address for a vehicle might be the most interesting / valuable bit and maybe thats the crux of the matter. For example it's a fair guess my own D3 is registered to Blackbox Solutions and our address is a simple look up as opposed to someone else. I am of course not in the UK myself but if i were it would be a simple matter to write DVLA with a change of address request etc.

With a bit of luck and knowhow you can potentially get quite a lot. After all you only have to write to DVLA on old fashioned paper and they'll send you the details of whoever owns a particular registration plate as long as you have some form of excuse e.g. they hit me and drove off or they parked on my land etc. There's a lot more too but not for public viewing Shocked Don't forget DVLA are busy selling your data to anyone with the dosh.

However this all falls down if you have personal plates. Like the time a mechanic was convinced the big round thing he'd had was a D3 air compressor cos Microcat said it was for that registration. I pointed out the part was for a FFRR and showed him the rectangular casing under my D3, and he twigged the customer had moved the registration but of course Microcat didn't know that Rolling with laughter

If you value your privacy, change your reg every couple of years as most systems can't keep up - get a cheapo reg of the same age from DVLA.
