One for the Gearbox experts |
|
I have mentioned on here my gearbox problems and the subsequent rebuild it had at Bristol Transmissions back in February.
All has been OK with the gearbox until I recently towed our caravan to the South Coast for a couple of weeks. On the way home we got stuck in a traffic jam on the M5 for about 45 minutes, just crawling along.
I eventually decided to leave the motorway and cut across country to the M42. During this journey I noticed that the engine was over-revving by about 30-40%, as if it were a manual with the clutch slipping. I wasn't shuddering at all. We stoped at Stafford services after about 45 minutes and on restarting, everything was back to normal.
That seems to indicate that the oil in the gearbox may have got too hot. I have had the codes checked and it's all clear.
Should I get the oil checked to make sure it's OK? Should I fit any additional oil cooling system? 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

If the oil has been that hot that it has disengaged the TC from locking up, I'd be inclined to have it flushed ASAP. It needs to be REALLY hot to do that...
The only time I have seen my gearbox oil temps above 85 degrees was after a prolonged slog up the M6 towards Shap, with an RRS in tow.
Had the IID plugged in monitoring things (as I always do when towing heavy loads) and noticed it up at 95. Did back off and drop a gear but it maxed out at 106 degrees. At no point did the TC unlock... My D3 Build Thread

Do you have any fault codes on the transmission? Were you in tip mode and manually shifting between first and second?
As mentioned, it could have got the oil very hot as when you are pulling away, the torque converter stays open and that really warms the oil up.
Get the oil flushed and you should be ok. A suggestion next time, would be to use low range when stuck in traffic like that to allow the converter to lock as you'll be in 2nd or 3rd low range which is about the same as 1st high range. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Thanks, guys for that, and the tip about using the low range.
I had the codes checked and there were none.
I was in auto in high range so just moving off and braking again, repeatedly for 45 minutes or so. I might occasionally got into 2nd.
