Oil stabiliser - Essential, Placebo or Snake Oil ?

I have no direct experience, and know that some people swear by, and some swear at, Oil Stabiliser.

I'm now in the camp that uses top quality fuel, filters & oil but don't add additives.

I haven't seen a review or lab. test of an oil stabiliser - your thoughts please?

I know Flack uses an oil additive but can't remember the name. I do know I looked it up and it was certainly not cheap.

I use Lucas HD oil stabiliser on every change, engine is much quieter and smoother from cold and I feel minimises the chance of dry starts.

Helps with my peace of mind so worth it as far as I’m concerned.

It achieves the quieter cold starts by thickening the oil . This in itself causes more damage in a cold engine . If anything a cold engine requires less viscous oil hence the trend towards thinner multigrade oils in modern engines. Quite commonly added to old engines to quiet them down before selling.

Snake oil, with the price of quality oil everything needed is already in it.

I think that’s a good test, I hadn’t seen that one. I like the abrasion test you can see how the oil clings to the metal components, cold pore test was close to standard.

I’m happy to keep using it.

That abrasion testing machine as a selling tool has been around for at least 50 years, I remember seeing it as a kid, and my Fil telling me a sales rep was trying to use it to sell his garage oil decades ago.
There is also the geared lucas one that used to be on all the trade counters.

Oils are so specialised now, so long as the oil meets the spec then it is good enough.

Personally I stick to a top quality oil & filter and let that do its job, and I change it annually - which for me is about 4,000 miles.
I do use a quality flush additive before I change the oil, but that's another debate.
