Oil pump failure. Did I save the engine in time ????
Hello there. Looking for some help here. Also This could be quite a save if im lucky. This morning I drove to work 4 minutes away hardley enough time for the disco machine to warn up. When I arrived I noticed there was a funny sound from the engine as if there was a blowling turbo noise. So after work i hit for home, engine sounded a lot worse even a bit rattlety knocky. Anyway I got it back home. Turned it off and went to investigate. So I eventually figured it could be the oil pump (it's a 07 after all). So i stripped every thing back down to the timing belt cover. When I persuaded to cover off. Things started springing everywhere. The cam belt came loose, the oil pump tensioner fell out on the ground and the cam gears rotatated a couple of degrees, I think the pistons were under compression perhaps. So do you guys think I might be okay to throw an oil pump in and see if it works. And obviously any recomendation how to get her back into the correct timing would help as i have no idea where the cams are right now. Just to say I think that the timing belt cover held the oil pump tentioner in place just long enough to realize what was going on.

If it was still running, you may JUST have gotten away with it
If it were mine, I'd be putting a new pump and belt on it, due to it still running
If it had cut out, and wouldn't restart, then I'd suggest it was new engine timeMy D3 Build Thread

That's Disco_Mikey. U da man That's some great news. Looks like I'll be taking it on myself as it's parked ouside the front in bits. Also I I'll put up a few pictures of fitting new oil pump as I don't see much of it on the forum. I'll probably need to take the starter out and lock the flywheel with the camshaft to find where the timing is at. I better look up how to do that. I don't rightly know where that is eitherDicovery 3 (Rimini Red)

If the cams have not sprung round, you can "tension" the belt with a lever, and turn the engine to align the cams. That "should" bring the flywheel timing marks to about the right placeMy D3 Build Thread

buy a lottery ticket!
you need to remove the starter, to lock the crank (with tool), to be able to undo the crank bolt, to be able to remove the oil pump.
But you can't just rotate the crank around, to find the locking hole, as that will do minor damage to valves.
Some how you need to move all 3 wheels around, roughly in sync to get back to TDC.
EDIT: As mike says, he suggests you can tension the belt with a lever, apparently
Look how far you are out, to decide the direction

Il buy the lotto ticket when I have it back to running smoothly as before. Has any1 made up a locking pin for the flywheel before. Think I'll concentrate on fitting the oil pump first. Not looking forward to taking out the starter tho.Dicovery 3 (Rimini Red)

As I said, you need to undo the crank bolt, to get to the oil pump.
The tools at the back of the box, one for auto one for manual.
Getting the starter out isn't too bad.
Move the heat exchanger to one side. (undo 1 bolt)
Wires can be fiddly.

Thanks Pete thats not a bad piece of kit for the price of it. By any chance do you know which locking pin is for the auto. the big one with the offset pin or the big one with the pin centered

I recently bought this kit when I did my belts, great for the money but I did have to reduce the diameter of the crank locking tool to get it to fit the hole, the cam pins fitted perfectly.
The tool with the centre pin is the one for the Auto box cars.

I found the same as well, had to get it machined to fit.

Just file it down on the outer diameter.
