Good afternoon Grant,
Many thanks for the update.
This is most curious. I know the 5w-30 vs 5w-40 battle has been waged for a long time, now you have entered a new contender- 5w-50
I look forward to seeing how you get on. In the short term, I am pleased to read that you have experienced benefits so far.All the best,
Austin

The oil you have used is a full SAPS oil. Anything with a DPF should use low SAPS oil...
Quote:
APS or Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur, are a component of European synthetic motor oils additive content. Sulfated ash is a byproduct of the burning additives that help oil cleanliness and protect against soot. Phosphorus and Sulfur help with the oils anti-wear properties so we can achieve the extended intervals that the European synthetic oils require.
SAPS can cause challenges with diesel particulate filters and catalysts, so ‘Low SAPS’ are used in diesel synthetic motor oils
Can you please recommend a 5w-50/50 low SAPS oil please?
I'm looking for high quality, rather than low price

My old D3 is still in the family pool car with 230,000 miles on it. Always on 5/30 and doesn’t use any oil between annual services. I think you just have to roll the dice. If an engine is going to fail, it’ll fail, regardless of what you do grade wise etc.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

Engine is fine.
Had the vehicle about a month.
Rattled like hell when i got it.
Really pleased with the improvement.
Valve lifter ticking is almost gone.
The engine purrs nicely.
I dont think it was maintained well.
When i got the vehicle, the 1st thing i did was stick a new filter * recommended oil in...
Ran ok for 5 minutes from cold, then rattles.
Now, the rattles have almost ceased & im happy with it.

Not unknown in the 'back street sales trade' to put a heavier oil in to quieten things down, Castrol supply a 5w50 oil c2 low saps, seems to be a ford spec.
