Most manufacturers warranty a car / engine to 100,000 miles if it does the milage in three years. However, most cars will be at mid 30 to early 40,000 miles before the warranty runs out so the manufacturer doesn’t car about engine wear. Any after market warranty will want servicing in line with the manufacturers specification and will want to see evidence of that including correct oil changes.

However, if warranty companies saw an opportunity to reduce engine fail claims, then would a change in oil specification to compensate for wear not be a sensible precaution? If the science and engineering information is out they to support it, why haven’t they done it or recommended it?

For the first time ever I’ve gone to interval service oil / filter changes on my D4 at 96000 miles. I was going to put 5w40 in but the garage said stick to the proper specification because it will invalidate my warranty but stick to more frequent changes.

Again, if you got warranty on Disco 4 up to 100,000 miles & the engine is breaking up, then you have no worries at all if it snaps a crank, lifters fail etc.
Good for you.

My Disco 4 has 155,000 miles on it & i have no warranty or anything... hence solving the issues myself.

Word of caution re additives...
Read the label.... & read it again.

Some will suit a Disco, some will not.
Some are Low Friction, & some may / may-not be compatible with synthetic oils

If you use an additive such as STP...
Note that... it is an oil THICKENER...
Not only will it thicken the oil at high temperatures, but it also is VERY thick at low temperatures & potentially be catastrophic at low temps/cold starts for a Discovery 3/4.

There are lots of additives out there, some better/worse than others.

Additionally, some of the good ultra low friction additives are also good at stripping carbon & sludge from the inside of an engine & create more problems than they cure.

Well my engine has 120,127 miles and is locked solid.

We have made the choice to get it rebuilt at QP online.

So come September I can give some more information for this topic as mine has a full detailed history of oil changes every 15k.

So will be interesting to see how the bearings etc look.

Hi AJM,

So sorry to hear about your engine lock up.
This is terrible news...

Did it happen at low revs ie pulling away from a junction or similar.

Will be very interesting to see some pics of the main crank & con-rod big-end bearings.

I am looking out for a crashed Disco4 same specs etc as mine & strip it down, also rebuild an engine & have it ready & crated.

Was at 70mph in 8th gear, we had came off a roundabout and had got up to speed.
So about 1600-1800 rpm?

No knocking, banging or anything loud.
It just had a brief split second thrum then died.

It was serviced on the 24th April. I did an oil change back in November, and it had its last proper service February 2024.

I want the crankshaft back from them as a keepsake as it’s going to be the biggest bill I’ve ever had from any car in one go.

Just read this and it's VERY interesting for me... as earlier today I made a similar post on the sister RRS Forum.

Have been following LR Time's YouTube channel for a while and was very interested in this video where he goes into the reasons behind some of the T/SDV6 engine's issues.... in particular, his derision of JLR's recommended 5W30 oil, rather than 5W40.

The reason being, I'm pondering buying a friend's 2010 3.0 TDV6 L320 but have had mixed experiences with JLR lately..

- My 2006 D3 (2.7 TDV6) was brilliant for 4 years until I sold it. It's still going strong with the current owner and now has over 200k miles on it.

However...

- the 2010 L320 3.6 TDV8 I bought to replace the D3 needed a new oil pump within 2 months of buying it, then it ate a turbo shortly thereafter... a £5k bill (over £6k incl. the earlier oil pump). That experience rather put me off(!)

I'd hasten to add that I wouldn't chalk up the TDV8's failures on the engine oil spec, I'm just interested to know what expert thinking is on the oil viscosity for a 3.0 TDV6 and whether using 5W 40 would be better..?

.

Many interesting issues here - the key one I have been banging on about is the oil...

for our members here, specifically about the Oil type - see video from 25 mins..

Then take a look at Oil Pressure issues . . from 29 minutes... I was banging on about this also

and we keep coming back to Censored 5w30 oil.... to upgrade to 5w40 or 5w50 to get more pressure in a rattley engine..

Grant-B... brake pad wear sensors sorted?

Tip: don't just pull the old cable out. Feed the new one along the same routing, then swap out the fixings as you unplug one.
