Oil pressure light - Came up and now disapeared ???

Hi,

I have just experienced a strange notice with my 2005 D3.
I recently rebuilt completely the engine, starting with a bare block.
The previous engine was broken (rotating big-end bearings).

I have now drove about 500 km with this rebuilt engine.

Last weekend, I change the oil filter for a Britpart one. I wanted to have a new filter since the engine was rebuilt from new. Just in case there was any debrits in it.
Filter was clean.

After this filter change, I went for a drive in a nearby mountain road. It was a 800m uphill drive, which I drove quite quickly.
Almost at the end of the drive, I saw the engine oil pressure bulb flickering. I stopped immediately. Once stopped, the oil pressure bulb was constantly on.
I stopped the engine, checked the oil level. It was ok.
I checked the oil pressure switch plug. It seemed ok.
I started again the engine, it showed fixed oil pressure bulb.
I parked the car and towed it home.

Once home, I measured the oil pressure. With the engine cold, it showed 2 bars at idle speed & 5 bar at 3500 rpm.
I put the engine oil pressure switch back on.
Engine seems to be running normal. No special noise, banging or other.

=> Do you have any such experience ?
What could be the failing system : oil pump, engine, oil pressure switch, wiring, any other ???

Thanks for your ideas / experience sharing !

there are 1 or 2 instances of wiring or dash problems causing the light to be on,

for example :

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/d3-27-oil-p...l+pressure

Maybe you should fit your own bulb between oil pressure sw and cigar lighter +

If the dash light comes on, without the extra light, you know its not a real issue.

Try and measure also the engine hot. Mine was 2/5 bar cold and then hot was very low.

Hi guy's and thanks for the prompt reply.

I had the issue with the engine indeed hot.
I was driving quite fast on a long mountain road. I did not measure the oil temperature at that time.

It was also a hypothesis I had that the oil was very hot and very fluid, leading to more internal leaks and a lower oil pressure.

Then, I have 2 questions :

- What is the normal oil temperature range (on a nice and flat road & driving like mad on a mountain road & loaded) ?
- Did anyone allready installed a separate oil pressure gauge on top of the oil pressure switch ?
I found this one from a french supplier that looks useful :

Thanks Pete K, I will do that.
Do you suggest to install diods to isolate both circuits and avoid shorts between the dash and the cigar lighter ?

Yes you could Thumbs Up if you know what you are doing.

That way as soon as the light comes on again, you will know if its a genuine oil problem or not

nothing much, just lost my crankshaft.....

Never found the cause of it. engine was rebuild, oil changes every 3.000 miles always good quality filters and oil.

The oil light was one of the symptoms mentioned in the repair guide for leaking A pillar trims

Hi Kostas,

Oil pressure measured tonight with warm engine.
Oil temperature : 90°C, coolant temperature : 80°C.

Oil pressure at idle : ??? low ??? My gauge needle barely move.
I had no red oil pressure warning light.
Oil pressure at 3500 rpm : ??? 1-2 bars, quickly fluctuating.

What pressure did you read when you measured it ?
