I'm afraid I've turned into one of those drivers who desn't care where the oil filter is thats one of those enginey related thingies the dealer sorts out at each service isn't it?
I think it was 1994 the last time I changed the oil and filter on one of my cars.... Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Well you see I came to the D3 from a string of French MPV's (I know I'm sorry, I won't do it again ) and company cars unlike the 'real men' on this forum who have graduated the hard way (with oily rags and socket sets) from D1's D2's and Series/DefendersSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
You also need a large socket to fit the plastic nut moulded on the oil filter cover.
BTW, drain the oil completely before you remove the oil filter cover otherwise you will have oil filling up the space around the oil filter. You can't get to clean this up because it is too tight to get any rages in there.
The paper element comes out with the plastic cover and you need to knock the cover off by inserting a rod down the centre of the element while gripping the element. I'm sure there is a special tool for this but I did it without - just a bit messy with oil on your hands.
Make sure you replace the sump plug as well. LR state the sump plug is to be replaced at the same time. The plug uses a rubber "o" ring unlike other cars that use a metal washer.
Happy oil changing.

URGENT: Can't get oil filter element out of housing
Thanks PCH for your tips on removing the paper element from the housing, but I'm in the middle of changing the oil and I can't get the element out. Anyone got any further tips of how to remove the element from it's plastic housing?Matt
It's sorted. Just needed to be a bit more forceful with a large screwdriver!Matt

A good job well done
all I would add - just to keep the H&S Nazi's happy - is always support the vehicle independently of the suspension if you have to work underneath it
