official Email from Land Rover received today - "Security"

received an official email from Land Rover today, and with some incredulity read the following passage from it:- - so they do admit their security is crap, and they do officially recommend the use of Faraday pouches, but they don't supply them, you have to go to a 3rd party!

"We would recommend double locking your Land Rover when you don’t require imminent re-entry. You may also wish to store your keys in a faraday bag when not in use. Faraday bags are available from third party suppliers and block the key fob’s radio signal, preventing criminals using a ‘relay’ attack to gain unlawful access to your vehicle."

Every manufacturer with keyless entry cars is subject to the same risks as JLR, so to say their security is rubbish is a bit misleading IMO. Putting the key in a faraday pouch is just good sense but if they want to nick the car (any car) they will.

What changes the game, as has been said above, is that now LR have put that out there officially then it may well be yet another get out of paying clause for insurance companies....

'' Was the key to your brand new JLR in a faraday pouch as per the manufacturer instructions?...no?... sorry no claim then as its your own fault it was stolen as you failed to secure the vehicle''

I'd like to think (hope) that useful advice isn't classed as a mandated procedure. It's also good advice not to leave your keys on a table next to the letterbox or in your back pocket as you walk along but to the best of my knowledge, you would still be covered if someone went fishing or dipping.

Are you referring to the JLR "In-Control" app?

If so can anyone define which vehicles can take advantage of this app.

I believe that it is those with two flaps in the overhead console which can be pressed open to reveal the emergency call button (SOS icon) and the Optimized Land Rover Assistance button (spanner icon).

If theft of vehicles through the keys not being kept in an RF sheilded place is such a problem why has it not become a unique selling point for manufacturers of trousers to include a RF shielding pocket? Perhaps because customers would put their cell-phone in it and complain . . . ?

The fabric used for RF pouches won't stand up to washing machine cycles.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Got the same email today. was confused about whether it was possible for me to use this app on my car. Had to resort to checking the 'Land Rover remote' app details on Play store , where it states that the car must be fitted with one of the following packages:

• InControl Protect
• InControl Remote
• InControl Remote Premium

Not sure how this app differs from the InControl app that's been out years, but since mine has none of the above I can't use it. Why they couldn't put that information in the initial email I don't know.

Have used faraday pouches for some time. Having to replace them about every year to 18 month as the coating wears out and they no longer block the signal.

Cheers
 Gary
