Los Monegros (Europes largest desert), Bardenas and Guara
It's an old post to reply to but...... these guys sell great roadbooks including for the Pyrenees:
“I have used road-books and GPS points a couple of times before in the Pyrenees. It’s a great way to see the country and to do something a little different, if you have the right motorbike. We were looking for something adventurous but doable on fully loaded up KTM950 Adventures. Something that would mix scenery, track types, countryside and opportunities to rough camp, use camp sites and small hotels if necessary. There is not a great choice of road-books out there but I found the Vibraction website via Google. Only one problem – the site was in French and so were all the road-books. Luckily, Philippe and Christine responded to my enquiry in English and could not have been more helpful or accommodating – a rare commodity in today’s commercial world.
The road-book turned up as promised and I got the GPS points emailed through in the right format for my TomTom. The road-book is only available in French but it doesn’t really matter. The pictures are very clear and as long as you know left/right/follow (gauche/droite/suivre) in French, you can understand pretty much everything that’s been said.
The road-book was very accurate and the route was fabulous. We chose the Traverse across the Pyrenees from east to west and completed about 550km of the 1000 km route. Even within that small part of the route we travelled through snow, desert, forest, steppe, rough camping, easy trails and tough steep rock strewn tracks. There was a great mix of off-road and tarmac (60/40 split) – the roads were some of the best I’ve ridden in Europe. And compared to the Alps, it feels almost deserted. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for adventure on your doorstep!â€

All of Northern Spain is fantastic location with great landscapes, cuisine, wine and wonderful people. Do your homework and you'll have a great time. Remember it is very hot in summer 40° and can often be -5° for days on end in winter away from the coast. Great roads to with little traffic except Spanish bank holiday weekends which must be avoided.
Apart from Catalunya and the Basque Country check out the central pyrenees and Aragon: Los Monegros (Europes largest desert), Bardenas and Sierra de Guara. National Parks might be problematic. Check out Vibraction.

I know I'm replying to an old thread but just after a bits of a heads up.
I'm getting married in Spain in this coming August in a town called Benahavis close to Marbella.
We're taking the D3, via the ferry to Santander and staying the week. Afterwards we are driving back home through France via Andorra, so... My question...
I know there are plenty of mountain roads and tracks but what are the laws on 'green laning' and what type/make of maps do people suggest. What do the legal tracks appear like?
Any info would be great. I'm not looking for days of adventure but maybe a few hours in the mountains.... Just to explore and suds out the area. I've looked at the vibraction site so hopefully combining the two I can find something....
Thanks all.300TDI Toy... Now gone

Do you have an iPad? If so get the TwoNav app & download the free maps from the Spanish Carto peeps. Bit of conversion needed re map format (TIFF to raster format) but if I can do it then it's not too techie.

hello:
It is difficult to find out about a single standard for all places here in Spain. Spain is organized into 50 provinces grouped into 17 autonomous communities. By the law of each autonomous regime provicia has its own administrative powers in their territory. Therefore there is no common standard for the use of resources. You would have to consult the case that you want to visit and see what legislated by the body responsible for the autonomous region in particular that is your interest. There is a law of general forest for Spain do not clarify much. As a very general rule I can tell you that ... the law is generally quite-restricting for the use of green roads in Spain .. and if you are near a national park or nature reserve, best move you forget thereabouts. Normally the circulation off road requires specific permissions and have to meet certain standards in terms of number of cars etc ... and also depends somewhat on the time of year ... when the risk of forest fires .... etc ...
.... And after all that ... there is still decides to break the law and enter on their own to fend for ... running the risk to be strongly punished ... lately fines against the environment, which according what circumstances this may be, have increased a lot ...
I hope I've reported something ... but I fear that not too ... but this is the reality now ... it's complicated ..lost in translation!

don't know if you plan on going through the Murcia region, but if you are, you will need a permit to drive anywhere offroad.
Driving is permitted, but as of last year you need to apply for a licence, whether it be for a little trip into the hills or an organised tour.Duncan
