Get yourself back to the screen where it gives you the On Road, Off Road navigation options. Can't remember what one it is, but if you choose one of the two setting and then go back into the 4x4 info, you should be able to bring the compass setting back up.

Yep, agree with that - although it's still a stupid way of doing things!
