Off-road Honeymoon in Oz - suggestions needed! :-)
Hello Aussies!
We're planning on a magic honeymoon in your lovely country!
It will be a 3 week trip with a few days of diving and maybe 5 days or so at some lovely paradise island in the NE but most importantly we would like to discover the outbacks! And what better way doing that than by going off-road in some 4x4!?!
Itinerary suggestions would be really appreciated since none of us have been to Australia! We're probably spend about 7-10 days off road and can fly in/out from any airport so great flexibility to explore your country and ideally we would also like to drive a bit on a deserted beach for some nice pictures!
Oh, and a small detail - if you know where we can hire an overland equipped 4x4 the contacts would be really appreciated since we can't bring our Disco!
Summery:
Time frame: end of January 2013.
Location: flexible start/end point (might depend also on where we can hire a 4x4?)
Accommodation: Camping and staying in hotels/B&B's
Level: we're very used to this kind of trips so a bit of adventure/challenge would be good for the marriage!
Looking forward hearing from you with some great suggestions!
How many on this honeymoon? Am I Gammon or Woke ? - I neither know nor care.

at the time of the year that you propose to visit our broad, brown land, you would be advised to stick to the southern latitudes. This would mean no higher than, say, Geraldton on the west coast and the Sunshine Coast (just north of Brisbane) on the east coast. Inland areas and the top half of the country will be fearful hot at that time of year.
As an example, where I live on the Pilbara coast in the north of Western Australia, typical daytime temperatures are in the low to mid forties (Celcius) every day. Nights cool down to a balmy 30 or so degrees. Not much fun if you are camping and you don't get to see much if you spend your whole time inside an airconditioned car instead of walking around looking at things.
In my own State, the wine district south of Perth is renowned for its food and fine wines. There are many places to camp and there are splendid beaches all along the coast. You may even be able to feed some of the White Pointer sharks and save us locals from sacrificing ourselves. We also have the magnificent State Forests with the tall trees and abundant native flora and fauna.
In South Australia, the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas are truly magnificent. We spent ten weeks last summer, just doing the Eyre Peninsula and it was truly a fabulous holiday. These peninsulas are still pretty much unspoiled and have very small towns along their coasts. Places like Smoky Bay, Streaky Bay, Venus Bay, Coffin Bay, Tumby Bay and Cowle are real gems. In between those places are even smaller, pristine camping areas on the coast, where you can get away from the crowds. If you are into fishing and crabbing, these are the sorts of places to visit.
Victoria has the Great Ocean Road, which is on our bucket list for a future holiday. The scenery is magnificent and the towns along the way each have their own niche attraction for tourists. If you are into seafood, you can satisfy your desires almost anywhere along that journey.
The coast south of Sydney in New South Wales, down to the Victoria border, is just to die for. We had a holiday there two years ago and were just blown away by some of the places we visited. So much so, in fact, that we are contemplating retiring in that part of the world.
I'm not going to say anything about Queensland. I don't like much about the place but I wouldn't want to colour any one else's judgment it. Someone else may want to fill you in on that State.
In general terms, there are heaps of places to camp (many of them cost a small fee), heaps of 4WDing tracks, heaps of friendly locals whom are usually only too happy to fill you in on the good spots in their area and lots of great food and beverages. Have fun and if you do the southwest corner of Western Australia you might just bump into us, because that's where we are heading for the summer.

Then the Queensland coast and hinterland southwards is just beautiful with more than enough to see, heading down to the Sunshine Coast, Maleny in the hills and around. Northbound you'd be heading for the serious heat.
It's a big place and impossible not to have great fun there. Enjoy!

Hey - those empty beaches sounds lush! Now we just need to make up our mind if we will go for the west side or the Queensland side!?!
Besides studying the map we'll also start to search for good options of where to hire the car...
Can't wait for January to come!

The beaches on Fraser or for that matter any where on the east coast will not be deserted,, It is peak season and will be chockers, and last couple of years flooded as well.
