Number plate transfer time? |
|
Did a deal on a d4 2 weeks ago dropped off my documents next day and was told 3-5 days for number plate transfer. Still not ready. Has anyone else done this recently and how long did it take for process to be completed. I m enjoying depreciation free miles in our 330i but other half is going mad and is desperate to pick it up.

Or take delivery ASAP with the old number, blag a set of plates with the new number & change them when the paperwork comes through.

Think i ll see if I can do this. Ground is drying up and going to be busy at work for a few weeks. Will have to see what the story is with tax discs and insurance documents.

Ins should be just a phone call to say "change to new number now", not sure how the tax disc change works but Shoud be straight forward and not stop you driving.

I did a DSL did when we picked ours up spanking new. Took it to DVLA in Maidstone, and they did the transfer there and then, including the VED. It's advisable to take the vehicle with you as they can insist on a spot check.

Took six weeks to change ours, finally got it sorted last week, phoned DVLA twice and got the same blunt answer, ALLOW SIX WEEKS, felt like just fitting our plates but with my luck some bright eyed bobby would have noticed the wrong reg on the tax disc,

this is the way I do it, also has the advantage that you get to keep the original plates. When you transfer the plate again, you will have the old plates and be able to put them back on

It took three days to get the transfer authorisation, and a week for the V5 to be sent at the end of March for me.

My experience is well within a week here in London. But I think it very much depends which DVLA region you live in.

Here in Manchester it normally takes a couple if weeks, however the last one the dealer did for me at time of purchase and it took less than 7 days... If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

it very much depends how busy DVLA Swansea are. New reg times and large dealer end of FY and FYquarters has an impact as the new reg volumes increase. It can take upto 3 weeks or get done in less than 1 week.
Also, not all local DVLA offices will accept over the counter applications. Duncan

There is a government proposal, which looks almost certain to be implemented next year, to close all 39 of the regional DVLA offices, transferring all processes to Swansea. My belief is that this will cause major delays to many of the proceedures currently carried out locally. We deal in vintage & classic cars, and we have always had great service from our local office, and in particular they are great at sorting out errors and dealing with less than straightforward situations. There is nothing like face to face contact sometimes.
If you wish to help prevent this happening, please go to www.savethedvla.co.uk and sign the petition. Also, please circulate the information to all who you know!
Thanks,
Ray

I've transferred my number many times in the last 40 years but only this last time did I encounter hassle. The dealer had to hand deliver everything to Bristol DLVC where there is some arrangement under which that office decides whether to handle it themselves or, if busy, to farm it out (by post) to another DVLC office. In the event it took just over a week. Doubtless some Government minister somewhere regards this as 'efficient'.
