Now I know why I bought a Discovery 3!

I was stopped at a set of traffic lights when a woman drove into the back of me at 70kph. She had not even touched the brakes. I felt like I was sinking back into a big armchair while I watched parts of her Nissan sedan sail 50 meters past me. Her car was totalled - the mighty Discovery did not even get propelled into the car in front. Damage to the Discovery? One displaced rear wheel and some minor bumper and light assembly damage.
She is out of hospital and OK, I hardly realised I had been hit. Thank God I bought a Disco.

Comforting to hear, but not surprising I guess. The Disco 3 is a heavy weight in anyones book, and hitting her must be very similar to hitting a stone wall. Having said that, I am still rather surprised and just a bit suspicious that there still doesn't appear to be an NCAP rating published on the Disco 3 (or RRS) yet Question

Glad to hear that you're okay and that she's alright as well. Do post some pics when you get a chance. I've always wondered how any passengers in my 3rd row would fare in a serious collision. Unless being rear-ended by a large truck or transit I'm beginning to think they'd be fairly safe....

This is a very good point. This also concerns me greatly. I'm sure many on here will jump to LR's defence with some wonderful reasons but I would love to see an official response from Land Rover. Maybe I'll write to them and post the reply on here.

...and it's not up to the manufacturer either ...the NCAP organisation dictates when and which models are to be tested. The manufacturer is just notified of this in advance and ....they cannot refuse the test or delay it either. The results, good or bad, are completely independent.

Sorry DickGriff, have a look at the job I do in my profile. This is my industry. EuroNCAP has no authority to order a test and the manufacturer can put cars forward whenever they choose. S-MAX and Galaxy have just been released but they are being tested right now as Ford have put them forward.
Discovery 3 will score well in side impact, knee injury and chest loads will be a little less good and pedestrian protection will be so poor that it will probably be headline grabbing.
If you're an occupant of the car you'll be ok. Big cars are generally much safer than small cars especially those under 1000kgs.
US NCAP operated by the NHTSB will also include a rollover test which shouldn't pose too many problems for the Discovery.
When I was at the Volvo Safety Centre in April 2004, D3's were being crash tested there then so they know exactly how the car will perform in tests.
Expect Freelander 2 to be tested very soon, it's safety systems were developed by Volvo from the start and it will score 5 stars for occupant protection.

In short, Land Rover have held the cars back from the tests probably due to the pedestrian issues. Secondly, EuroNCAP isn't the best test system out there and too many manufacturers build cars to pass a test rather than to be a safe car.

Keep smiling, you're safe IN your D3! being in the job I am in, I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't think it was as safe as the XC90 I traded in Wink

All respect to you Oliver Thumbs Up Consider myself 'in place put' Crying or Very sad

I am just reflecting the information available from NCAP to us common peeps Very Happy ....and the information sent to members from previous correspondance. Surely NCAP can just purchase the vehicles and test them as they desire though ..no?

I am glad to read your positive comments about the D3....pedestrians aside (should use the green X code anyway) And if you traded your XC90 for one then it must be good Wink

I'd still prefer to be run over by a D3 than a bus.
