NOT ATF Leak but low pressure fuel leak off pipe

Well after thinking how well my D3 was running it decide to shed loads of ATF. Slight drama as it poured onto the front driveshaft and was thrown onto a very hot exhaust. Lots of smoke but no flames.

I believe a supply or return pipe for the ATF pipe has failed. It is above the chunky bottom engine mount. It could be where the thermostat valve is situated in the following diagram (8 speed diagram but think my 6 speed is the same).

Has any one any experience of this problem and fixing it. To get a good view I really need the bracket removed. My cheap boroscope is another option to get a better look.

Thoughts anyone. And can it be fixed without a trip to auto specialist?

The 6 speeders don't have that valve.

THere are a number of threads of here, where the pipes have had (a small leak) and had to be replaced.

Not a fun job, but I don't think there is much to say

Removing the front diff makes replacement a doddle

Can be done without, but it's no fun Laughing

Thanks Mikey and Pete. I wish I could see the place where it is leaking. Taking diff out to get a better view may be beyond me. I will try to see where it is leaking with a boroscope and do some research on diff removal.

Well, the good news is it’s transmission fluid. It’s diesel and dripping from above this area.

Any thoughts?

have a look at the fuel rail on the side of the engine. (from above)

It is the braided looking leak off pipe broken/adrift?
It is leaking from the fuel rail connections?

NOT an ATF leak but a Detached Leak Off Pipe

Pete you were spot on. The leak off pipe had come off the rear injector on the passenger side.
Pushed back on and cable tie applied - yellow in picture. No idea why it should come have come off. All fixed for the cost of a cable tie and my time (free as now retired).

I should have realised it was not ATF as that smells horrible. It just goes to show the importance of good diagnosis of a problem.

Carry spare cable ties as I had the same, turns out the injector was working fine but was faulty by allowing high pressure fuel into the leak off pipe hence when you get the revs high enough it will pop off again or where it has least resistance
Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Thanks Dazz. So the leak off pipes could be fine but one or more injectors could be adding high pressure to the low pressure pipe going back to the tank. I vaguely recall the injectors being an expensive part(s).

I will take a look at the live injector values but not sure they will show up the leakage. If replacing the injectors I think it has to be all of them.

I took the option of buying two used ones off eBay about £60 each and swiped out what I thought was the bad ones in the system then had them checked and if the come back ok swop them back and try another two till you find the bad one or ones

Who did you use to check them?

A guy near me who specialises in diesel injectors and pumps. He tests spray pattern pressure feed and return and also (as some don’t ) the electronic solenoid for correct opening and closing
Do search and ask the questions I paid about £10-15 for each injector test you know what state your injectors are in and it keeps you mobile

Thanks Dazz. I will have to get them tested. The pipe popped off again this afternoon after I gave the car some welly. I thought the high pressure side of the fuel would be constant at any speed and revs but perhaps not.

When the car cools down I am going with a mate to refit the pipe with a fuel line clip but know another could also then come off.

I now wish I had gone onto the group but of injectors a few years back.

Yeah I made the mistake of buying a new leak off pipe £ 100 later and it blew them off too Big Cry so try and make do with the old pipe whilst sorting injectors out Thumbs Up
