Noisy Hand Brake

Since first using the vehicle off road I have had an intermittant problem with the electronic hand brake. You apply it and the most horrendous noise (like a grinding) occurs for about 5 seconds. It has been returned to the dealer several times where they seem to 'clean' the mechanism and declare it all fixed - again. All under warrenty. Has anyone had or heard of this problem.
Cheers

Noisy Hand Brake

Mine is back into the workshop for the third time for the same trouble. (It might just be our Tasmanian mud, DISCO444). I have now been told that I should take my spare wheel off before going through mud, as that is causing mud and water to run into the hand brake mechanism.!!!!!!

It has been dicussed alot. A design fault which LR will not admit to. Evil or Very Mad

so will they provide a rear mount spare wheel carier since they have declared that the std set up is no good for an offroad vehicle.

Noisy Hand Brake

My service centre submitted an EPQR to Land Rover Australia to seek a solution! I will get a full report on what they said when I pick up my vehicle. It seems to me to be incomprehensible that "the world's best 4WD" has a hand brake that cannot be taken into the mud and has to have the spare wheel removed to prevent a problem. I think I might have to go upstairs again on this one and rattle a few desks!!!

Hi Discovery343 and others,
I have the rear wheel carrier (and the spare tyre replaced by a long range fuel tank) so I don't think LR explanation is worth exploring!!! It seems to me that the problem occurs more often when the car is on a slope or has rolled back onto the transmission before the brake is applied. It dosn't seem to happen as often on the flat. Big Cry The brakes have been cleaned several times but the problem returns.

Its not just dirt ingress... its also an adjustment that goes out of whack as the auto adjust system doesn't work right.

MLR in melbourne recognised the problem and replaced my handbrake module under warranty. It happened again a few times after the replacement - was adjusted, and has not faulted since.

I'd be going back to your dealers and asking for the module to be replaced - a full day job as they have to pull half the car apart to access it (what was wrong with a simple handbrake lever Neutral) - there is a precedence where it has been recognised as a warranty replacement.

All the best.

Simon
