Noisy Compressor when cold
Just noticed this yesterday that there is a god-awful "buzzing" from the compressor when starting up from cold.
The noise goes away whilst dropping from off road height to normal or from normal to access, but then comes back once the desired ride height is reached.
Once the car has warmed up a bit the noise goes away completely.
Is it just the cold weather (FBH has packed in BTW ) or is the compressor about to go CLUNK ???

Are you sure that they aluminium mounting bracket hasn't broken in the cold weather?
It happened to one of the guys on the spanish forum this weekend - he hadn't banged it on anything, but it just sheared in two and started making a hell of a noise....

just the cold weather... Tolerences change when the parts get so cold. Will be back to normal when the weather is warmer. Might be a sign of it wearing oiut as I've never had it before, but this morning at -5, I had it. I opened the door and it stops, close the door & it starts again, so def the air compressor. Same thing happened to me yesterday. And yes when the car warmed up, by the end of the road, it stopped. Did not happen today though but I think it was a bit warmer at -3.

Frenchie / Andy - you were both at Bala with me and I had the same problem last night.
Drop the compressor cover and you'll find a mound of mud - when this freezes you're casing the compressor in 'concrete' - the thing can't move on its mounts.
When you get a bit of warmth it stops.
It took the lad about 30 minutes to drop the cover, get the mud out (about 1 Kg - frozen..) and put it back together.
I've washed the foam but left it out for now - I also have put extra holes in so I can hose it through better.
That'll learn you to drive through mud.... I see no ships........

thanks for the replies gents,
I was thinking (hopeing ) it was just the cold - then again it was only down to an almost tropical -7 here last night - nowhere near as severe as other parts.
Might be an excuse to take the compressor cover plate off & clean it out for once

Nah - he wants pocket money he can bl**dy well earn it
The deafner is on his wish list so he can start working on it ready for his 17th - negotiations etc are in-hand - if he behaves...I see no ships........
The problem you are having may be caused by ice accumulating on the compressor air filter. The pressure drop across the filter is usually enough to further chill the moisture ladened air and cause it to eventually block the filter. This is only a hunch, but where I work we have anti-icing on our gas turbine to prevent what I have said above. Run silent, run deep!! Not being very good with spanners can someone post some photos of the air compressor and what I need to take off in order to get at the mud that may be there. It was a good day at Bala though. Will definatly be doing that again. MY get some seat covers or not take the nephews the back of the car was like a field.

Can you squeeze one of those into where a TDV6 used to fit
It would be a tight fit, but wow what a prospect? Trouble is they are so labour intensive and have a much bigger drain on your wallet. Fuel consumption is dire too, we ran it on diesel for 1 hour and I reckon for the fuel used, everyone on this forum could run their D3's for the whole of their lives. A very hungry beast indeed!! Thanks Bodsy. Still amazed at the speed and knowledge of fellow members. Would never have attempted to do any mods or maintenance with out this forum as you know an expert is only a few clicks of a mouse away.
Thanks again Andy
