Thanks Robbie. Just out of interest, what is the best way to diagnose a faulty thermostat, or to confirm that it is working properly? Or if my 2005 car has done say 122k miles, is it due a change anyway?

Feeling the pipes and radiator by hand gives you a good idea. An IR thermometer puts some metrics on the process. Personally I use an IR camera dongle on my iPad, which gives me a complete insight into the system in no time.

That's a great idea. I used to have a FLIR Thermal digital camera, which I sold, but I understand FLIR also make dongles for ipad iPhone and android, as you said
