No Name - a trailer conversion.
Well the Sankey trailer rebuild has been put on ice due to Norwegian vehicle inspectors giving me a 200 kg usable load on the sankey.
A local made trailer with a Land Rover defender bolt circle was available and purchased.
Re-reading Wiggs sankey rebuild has given me some ideas.
The start.

Stripped down to bear chassis shows that the frame is not as strong as I would like so I have to go up a dimension in my own build.
I will make it modular so I can easily change chasis further down the road should it deem necessary.
I am building it around the the Howling Moon trailer top tent like Ent has.
I it liked so much at Peterborough that I ordered one right after the show and it will be delivered next week.
Stripped down makes it eaier to take measurements.
Bits left over now sold - money in the kitty.
I have been in contact with wiggs to get help on where to find some parts.
I have ordered 8 door locks from the bay of E.
I will use the hub adaptors from the sankey, but found the studs are too long.

So they are off for machining.
The aluminium for the frame was ordered to day, if my calcs are correct then the frame should come in around about 30 - 35 kg

The Howling moon trailer top tent arrived at customs today, import taxes are paid so I am just waiting for clearance.
The frame is starting to take shape, only tack welded at the moment for control.

Out of interest, are you using TIG to weld the Alu? It looks like a MIG plant in the background so was curious.....

Been promising myself an AC/DC TIG welder to do aluminium for a long time but after seeing your results I will get a spool of alu wire & suitable gas & give my MIG plant a go on some scrap to see how it comes out.
What thickness is the box section you are using?

I'm using 40 x40x 3mm, really considered 4mm but Im happy with 3mm, if it falls to bits then I will use 4mm.
I neally bought an AC/DC Tig to do the trailer an other bits, but the welding chappy I use talked me out of it.
Glad of that as the local supplier wanted over a grand for a cheapy and nearly 2 for a Goodun.
Then gas then filler rods then spares and the list goes on.
The welding chappy makes it look easy, but I dont think it is.

Rich,
Had a long conversation with welding chappy last night, its a high frequency pulsed mig weld apparently.
It propably has a hyperdrive flux capacitor pulse drive too.. So a regular MIG is a lot harder to work with.

On the positive side, I didnt pay for the welder, and he is doing the welds.
More bracing put into day, almost finished with bracing and roof bars.
I ordered 2 sheets of 4mm ali for the roof and floors, the floor will be welded, and the top riveted.
Ordered water and pressure proof rivets today, they couldnt give me a price yet but it sounds expensive.
I will use TEC 7 mastic / waterproof compound around all holes and plates to make sure we get a watertight and flexable joints.

Work continues
Front and back walls welded on today, some bracing for a possible spare wheel holder on the front wall.
Hinges - I thought about using stainless piano hinges and riveting them on, there is enough rivets there to hold it.
Looking at the front wall the extra plates for possible spare wheels visiable.

The back, after lookin at the pictures I should have made it in one piece and cut out the door, oh well live and learn, will do that on the next one
The front, I was planning to powder coat it, but how about buffing up and having it shiny ?

Cut work today and went to the local chandelry shop.
Found some OK hinges and a possible lock solution.
Expensive lock, but the bees knees.. bit cheaper than Southco.

Ok qualilty hinges.

Trial mounted a door today, happy with the results.

Three hings should hold. I got a new rivnut tool from MEM, great piece of kit. I have rivnuts in the pillar. I will use security bolts when fabrication is finished.
The door is resting on the door seal, good compression = hopefully weatherproof.

Roof bars, ground the welds down today, just a last finish, drill some holes and its off to powder coat
