No backbone ?

Is anyone else worried that the new entirely aluminium chassis's will compromise the new disco in any way ie towing ? I always think of a big strong ladder chassis underneath a car as a sign it's built for a proper job pickups ,defenders, etc . I'm just abit worried the disco will lose its credentials as a car that can be used for heavy work . Is there some clever design that means it's just as strong or do I need to go back to the trusty land cruiser once the D4 gets old !

The only heavy work the new D5 will get is taking Euphemia and Tarquin's bags to school. Laughing

Why should this be a concern when both the lighter Full Fat RR & RRSport have towing capacities of 3500kg Confused

I agree with you there moo Laughing but what if we want to put it through some proper work there quite a few soft roaders with high tow ratings just can't see how removing the strongest part of the car helps it apart from weight , like I say I'm happy if there's some clever way that it's somehow stronger but I haven't seen anything showing that yet

The official towing capacities vs real life performance are two different things though. There's no substitute for weight. Thumbs Up

LR know that a lot of people use these for towing and more and more farmers are now using them for live stock trailers as the defender is going. The end result I believe is LR will not rate the car for towing 3500 if they do not believe it is capable and safe to do that. However the proof will be in the pudding when it arrives.

LR say the D5 will retain key LR features such as off-road and towing capability, in fact they claim the former will be improved in the new model, my concern wouldn't be the abilities but wether an Aluminium chassis would survive the the tough and tumble over a longer term, it can crack and break where steel would dent and bend.

Exactly my fears you can't beat a ladder chassis for strength and durability after all it was one of the main things they kept banging on about with the D3 the big lift video and all that , my concern is we end up with another occasional use stipulation coming in like the whole detachable tow bar situation once a few people have put it through some real testing apart from taking Tarquin to sports day !

1 is like people have said you can't beat weight for towing.
2 is there is always a downside to most things no matter how good it appears in the brochure.

No! Range Range and Range Rover Sport seem to manage.

The D5 will be as capable as the current model, it will do everything the current car will do. The only impracticality I can see is the sloping rear windscreen.

If the price is right I will have one, but if rumours of a £7k - £15k price hike are true then my current one will stay.
