Newbie with a broken crankshaft - advice needed. |
|
Hi,
My first post on this forum
I've had my TDV6 SE for 16 months, its a 55 plate with 40,000 miles on the clock.
23/12/07 - engine dies on me on the M4, no warning.
24/12/07 - car is taken to Stratstone Aylesbury via LR assist. I'm given a Ford Ka as a courtesy car After speaking to LRA again, I'm given a Range Rover the following day
03-01-08 - I rang Stratstones to find out what happened, they say "dunno, but its gonna need a new engine. We need to speak to LR, do some tests, get some info and we'll get back to you to let you know if it's covered under the warranty"
07-01-08 - Still no news, so I ring Stratstones, and . . . . "The crankshaft has broken, we are still doing some tests and will get back to you" Still no mention of wether it's covered under the warranty or not.
So here I am, looking for some advice.
1) Has anyone else out there had this problem?? If so, was it successfully sorted out courtesy of LR??
2) I'm no mechanic, but I do have a little bit of car knowledge and I know that the crankshaft is not usually a component that fails all by itself. Does anyone have any ideas on possible causes for this at 40,000 miles??
Thanks in advance,
Pete

As Gareth says, if the oil has been allowed to get too low, that would do it, other than that, faulty manufacture or workmanship or damage during build, I would think. I believe someone on the RRS site has had this problem (in czech republic, from memory). Don't think he posted the outcome, but it was out of warranty. If yours is under warranty and you haven't let the oil get low ,there should be no reason for LR not to replace the engine. ( Edit: RRS guy was BBBB,(Bl**dy Big Bast**d Bang!) in Romania, not Czech Rep, silly me. ).

Personally I think it's typical Stratstones, in that they don't have a clue in what they're talking about.
Never heard of a crankshaft failing at 40k!!
If indeed it has, then it's a warranty issue!

Thanks for the quick replies, the last time I checked the oil was about 2 weeks before the incident and it was inbetween te high and low marks. This was done on a warm engine after about 10-15 mins.
Thanks again

If they ask, tell them you check it every week (as per user requirement....)
It should be covered under warranty, but knowing , I'd recommend moving it to a dealer than knows their Ar$3 from their elbow.......
Good luck & welcome to the iste, kepp us all posted on the outcome. In the meantime, rack up some miles on that loan car Bodsys Brake Bible

: ...............Yes, very true, and please don't move it to the H Wycombe or Heathrow either. In fact I'd get it on a low loader to either Yeovil or Lakeland right now. Good Luck and welcome d-p.

You'll get a new engine under warranty, providing they can't prove it was negligence on your part. Cranks can break - although if there is a flaw in the material they rarely last 40K Disco 5 HSE Lux

I wouldnt have thought it would have mattered where it broke, being one of the single biggest bits of iron in the engine, as you have then two bits of heavy metal moving separately to each other causing all sorts of mayhem.

If a pin breaks, then yes, bits of crank, piston, block etc everywhere. Can be noisy......
If it breaks at the flywheel, it's not too bad. It might only have cracked.
I'll ask when I get back to work. Might get to see the engine Eventually......... Disco 5 HSE Lux
