Newbie questions
Hi all,
I've noticed some comments on this board about waiting for the chime before starting the engine. Lo and behold if I wait before starting the self test completes and there is a chime. I have RTFMed and I can't find any reference to it (Australian V8 model).
Is this important? What does it do?
Also, when I look underneath at the back I found a large swinging weight on each side, behind the bumper. What are they for?

Can't remember seeing anything in manual but soon got into the routine of waiting for chime. Was told "It's good for the car" by a wiser sage than me so stuck with it. As for the weights I await those sages!

The wait for the chime was considered to be a way of avoiding system errors, though I think this is a red herring. The system continues its self-check regardless of whether you've cranked the engine or not.
I have found that if I'm too eager and don't wait for the chime before trying to raise the suspension, the up and down lights flash and the message centre tells me to start the car before I try to raise the suspension even though I've already started it!Have a nice day!

I think the wisdom in the 'wait for the chime' thinking is to preserve the battery volts whilst the car checks out all the ecu's and so-on.
It is known that a discharged battery will cause spurious errors at start-up, like your PC does not like getting interrupted when Windows is booting up.
I personally wait for the bong when I remember. I also quite often forget. My car gave a transmission error the other week, I did not wait for the bong, and the car had done lots of very short journeys for a few day. It cranked slowly, started and gave the error. I have not seen it since though.
The weights are mass dampers. To counteract any shake in the chassis.
