New Tyre Tread Depths
Had 30k out my Wrangler HP's, but since going to Continentals [they came with the stormers], I now need to look at changing soon as tread depth is about 2.25!! Thing is - I've only done around 16k on them!!! When I saw these tyres from new, I didn't think the tread looked that deep. Would this be correct? Do some manufactures provide less tread than others?
If so, this obviously makes a huge difference when pricing one brand against the next!!
Any thoughts?
Whats my best bet in this sector of 295/45/20 tyres - back to WranglerHP's, General UHP's etc???
I want good wear and roadholding in wet and dry - not so much off road [still got my 18's for that if I want]🏴

I had RR 20's on my TD5, and most of the 20" tyres had tread depth more akin to a car tyre, approx 6mm, whereas the 18 & 19" wranglers had approx 8mm, and didnt seen to wear as fast as the 20's.
Are you running 275/45s, or 295/40's, as I thought 295/45's were a touch too big. Dont think you can get Wranglers in this size, so have to be something else. Conti's and grabbers made by the same firm now.

Al, it's 295/40's; thought the 45 profile may give a little better ride/protection!!
But do you reckon I'll have a problem with the 45's ... is this where the rubbing issue kicks in?🏴

as a straight replacement for a 255/55x19, a 275/45x20 is the closest. The 295/40 is a bit too wide, and slightly too small (2.4" less circumference).
Also, I think the 275 might give a slightly less harsh ride, and less likely to tramline. I had 295/40x20's on my TD5, and it crashed and banged over bumps/potholes/etc.
And, I'm pretty sure you can get 275/45's in at least 110 weight rating, as opposed to 106 normally found on 295's. I think Conti, and I've seen Nexen (although I dont know how good quality these are) are availible in 275 @ 110V.
hope this helps

Thanks Al, yep was thinking of going down to the 275/45's, though need to check it suits my 9.5" wheel width.
[unfortunately don't have the software to run the tyre calculator chart]🏴

275/45 is fine on a 9.5 inch rim. Is ok on 9-10.5" rim.

Tyre Wear
Hi,
Me too!- bought September 2005 with Continentals on the car - first comment was doesn't look like much tread!
Done 14500 and had numerous returns to dealer for knocking off road on the steering- steering rack changed twice - ball joint changed-steering column changed etc. At the last visit the tracking was set by the dealer which was found to be slightly out. 2100 miles later and the front tyres were completley scrubbed on the inside and outside walls with wear down to 2 or 3mm on the rest. Returned to dealer who "Not had this problem before syndrome" agreed to have vehicle retracked which again showed the toe to be marginly out and as a good will gesture a 50% contribution to 2 new front tyres. On collecting vehicle they had topped the fuel up - after reading some of your comments I now know why! Still not happy so dealer contacted LA with basically tough! quoted TSB number to dealer and also contacted LA myself. Still waiting!. By the way nearly all the curtesy vehicles have had knocking on the steering off road - when are LA going to sort this out.

Mine has had both lower front wishbones replaced, and I am glad to say that the steering knock is much better.

Tintenter,
according to the website, these tyres don't come in HSE/19" size... or have I missed something?
Also, how do they compare, price-wise, with the alternatives?DGRR
