I got my Cooper STTs attached this morning, they really do look the business. Shame that the car now steers like a zeppelin Since I now have 50% more sidewall than I did with those RRS tyres, this is not such a surprise.
I've also seen more evidence of the DSC light since the new tyres went on, just heading round normal corners at normal speed, but that will hopefully pass as I wear the top layer of the rubber off.
Does anyone know if the road noise will also diminish a bit over time? I had heard the STTs are noisier than the MTRs - so again it's not such a surprise. Just have to turn the stereo up a bit!
Those eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that I've also put in a bid on some 18" SE wheels with part-worn tyres on ebay. At the moment, I think that it's a slightly better deal than buying new road tyres for my 18" wheels.
I'm going to have to be careful though, if I win these I'll be up to 15 wheels for one car. Probably not as many as DSL though

My STT's are alot quieter now that they were, they do need a bit of bedding in.
I don't fine any diffrence with the handling of the D3 with the STT's on.
I've got STTs, but I only put the 17" wheels on for a few days at a time when I'm going off road. I've not noticed any decrease in noise as they wear, but you do get used to it. I rarely drive without the music on anyway, so the extra noise isn't a problem.Matt
The STT's stay noisy I am afraid, yes the feel is totally different but don't forget if they are brand new it is even worse and I found that the grip did improve and you also 'adjust' your driving style to compensate after a while.Zermatt silver 06 reg.
Has anyone had to do a high speed emergency stop or brake with the STTs on?
I'm thinking about leaving them on for a couple of months when the winter really sets in....assuming they would offer more grip than the Pirelli Zeros.
I just wonder if they offer good enough handling and stability at motorway speeds. I know they're rated at 99mph, but it worries me a little if you're pushing the tyres near the limit over long periods.Matt

I did about 5k miles with STT's on - once you get used to the different handling they are quite capable in fast corners and will not let go under heavy braking
BCB - are your pressures OK? didn't see any DSC activity with mine....
Chris - thought your were ST's

At the moment the pressures are 'whatever the tyre fitters fancied', so advice on what a good level is would be appreciated.

OK Chris, you made your point
BCB, I used to run mine at standard pressures initially, found they were better with an additional 1-2psi on road, 2-3 psi less than standard offroad
Didn't notice any handling issues when I had them on apart from a touch of oversteer occasionally. After a lot of mucking about I found the standard 33 on the front, 36-42 on the rear was ideal 99% of the time RobThe End
I find that the steering is vague and lighter with the STTs on, but that is probably due to there being less rubber in contact with the road than the 19" road tyres.
Overall, I haven't felt much difference with the handling. Except the steering is noticeably different, so does make it feel worse than it is.Matt

Agree with the bit of oversteer occasionally - always thought it was my driving
I suppose the tyre pressures depends upon what feel 'right' in each situation, for me, a slight increase on road and a decrease offroad (to assist with tread clearance) worked OK

So, the 33 front, 36 rear pressures... are these for any tires you use on the D3 ?
Just wondered as all the tyre sizes LR do have the same pressure, and now you mention same pressures for the Coopers ?
Curious.

33 front, up to 42 rears dependent upon load (beer)
the TP's are vehicle specific, not tYre specific - have a play around though, a couple of psi either way will affect the 'feel' and tyre wear, get it to the point where you're comfortable with the balance

Chris,
How are the 18" STT's doing?
Any idea how they compare with the 17's on the road?
Do you leave them on the car?
Has the rubbing stopped/worsened/car erased yet??
...My Scorpions are now down to about 3mm and I can't wait any longer for the AT2's to come out!
