New Sat Nav with DAB, AA, CarPlay, GPS, BT, R/Camera etc

I recently bought another D3 after being in a new XC90 for a few years, very nice but far too reliable!

After getting used to up-to-date in car tech, the 2008 sat-nav screen etc seems so old, plus the maps are often obsolete.

I thought there would be loads of threads on here about these units but I didn't find much so here you go:

I bought one of these (or the same as this, there are a few suppliers). It cost $250 including shipping.
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/16g...5776ZWM11E

The screen is the same size and fitment as the original ancient one and looks integrated when finished.

Pretty easy to fit once you pull a few panels off and has tons of features - TPMS, OBD, Camera inputs plus an Android operating system and integrated CarPlay. Has it's own GPS and comes with Nav but using Waze etc through CarPlay is also excellent. Reverse camera was the only bit requiring some fiddling - the rest is plug and play.

It uses the existing amplifier and the steering wheel controls still work.

I also got a 4G modem included which I routed to the glovebox for easy access to SIM. The carplay is via USB (also charges) and I put this in the bottom centre between the 12V socks - you can also but a wireless CarPlay adapter but I usually plug in to charge anyway.

I've added a few photos of install. - the little black thing on the window is the GPS aerial, could be put on the dash easily too.

Only thing gone is the 4X4 info screen, not a great loss and there's probably an app.....

Cheers!

Also appreciate posting this - I've been keeping an eye out for the last couple of years, in times gone by I used to have a "carputer" install in my old camper that gave this kind of functionality as a standalone capability but times move on and Android based headunits are so much easier than building your own

The problem I've found is lack of carplay support - lots of chinese headunits but not many support this feature so very interested to here more!

Hi,

The brand was Xonrich but they seem to come from Xtrons too.

It's the Android 10 version.

This is the link for the unit I bought:
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Car...706fylj1rz

I realise in the past these have been hit or miss, but now they are really good! CarPlay was extra *$4! but is integrated so no dongle needed and works perfectly, in fact much faster to start than on my Volvo system.

Oooh this all looks good but got some questions. What do you do with the fibre optic loop that goes through the existing display? How is the audio routed through the speakers, does it use aux in to the current radio? Do you know if it works with the HK audio system? Do you need specific TPMS sensors?

Sorry, loads of questions I know and if you don't know the answer then fair enough, but this looks a better option than the traditional one of rip out the main radio (which then means you can't set the clock....)

Hi Bungle,

It comes with a fibre optic loop cable, you just connect that to the feed that used to go the the original unit.

You can keep your clock! The new system sends audio into the existing amp. I have the HK system and works perfectly:
It's supplied with an audio cable with red/white photo plugs on one end (to the unit) and a 3.5mm jack on the other (for AUX). I simply drilled through the cubby, took out the little aux unit, connected and pushed back behind the panel so it' hidden. If you don't have an AUX you could wire it into the back of the radio directly. I did think about this as a few people say the AUX sound isn't good, but that's all it does anyway, so this seems a good way. I have tested sound with BT, Spotify from the unit and music via iPhone, all sound really good no interference or buzzing.

You can get TPMS sensors with it for a few extra pennies - I didn't bother as I have eyes Smile - I suspect many types will work with it.

Fantastic, thanks for that. I think I know what my next project is (that or adaptive cruise control or getting the LPG system working again so I can afford to actually drive it.....)

Do you know if it can be upgraded to support wireless carplay?

There are some available with wireless CarPlay if you search around the alibaba site, a bit more expensive.

You can also buy a wireless converter though, loads available.

Cheers

Hi,
Big thanks for posting this as its something j want to do. I've already swapped the head unit for a Pioneer one but want a top screen for sat nav and reverse camera. Does this unit then connect to the OEM HU via the aux lead? Is it possible to connect speakers to it directly instead of aux? The bypass kit ive fitted could then connect to it without the need to have an amp.

If there's enough interest, could we sort out a bulk buy?

You always need an amp........... for normal volume...

So or the head unit needs an internal amp, or you use a external amp, like the HK or aftermarket...

TBH if you have a HK speaker system in you discovery (9 speakers or more) the end amp of a headunit only (almost every head unit) is very very poor for that...

Look at the power rating for each channel of a HK and at that from the desired headunit and take the 9 or more speakers into account......

No issue if you do not have a HK amp, since those speakers can cope with a standard headunit amp... but otherwise....you need current....

Other wise bad sound and or blown speakers... (they burn, when the power of an amp is insufficient (not the otherway arround)

Just a observation Wink
 Best regards
Harold

Yes, it will need an amp. If you have an aux input in your Pioneer unit (on the back), you could wire into this.

Btw, for anyone worried that using the AUX input on the existing Land Rover unit will be too quiet, it isn't. I can't tell the difference. You can use the existing socket or wire into the back of the original radio.

Any questions about functionality or install, please ask. This thing looks original, sounds good and gives great functionality.

Hi Scwede. I went to place an order but could not see the option to add the 4g modem or the reverse camera. Did you purchase it all together or from different sellers?

All from the same seller - just send an inquiry rather than clicking "buy", their response time is very fast. Btw the rear camera is "ok" but it has all the cabling so you could buy another later if it doesn't suit - they plug in at the tailgate so easy enough to replace. And it cost virtually nothing.
Cheers
