My main question isn't wether I will like the new D5, I am sure I would, it's the price. The DS is a smaller 7 seater, the HSE at £42k plus. The D5 will also be a 7 seater and I can't see it will be priced in direct competition to the DS, therefore i can see the entry level being £50k with the HSE over £60k. That's more than I am willing to pay. The other thing is they all look very similar in styling. Apart from the bonnet badge, I am sometimes struggling to see much of a difference between different models.

That's my gripe, and the rumours are that it will be £7k over the current entry level price which puts it at £49k Shocked crazy prices

LR are a business - they will make as much profit as they can and charge as much as the market will stand.

Brand loyalty is for the punters - not the company

But mistakes are made, charging too much for the D5 may be one

And hard to rationalise no Defender replacement until 2019

@ The Dundonian: I'm not condoning the practice, but it's odd how a number of the German manufacturers thrive on one design, available in several sizes. Audi and BMW are particularly helpful, by giving their different sizes sequential number, just like buying shoes; it gets confusing when others, like VW, give their different sizes names - a Golf becomes a Jetta, an even bigger Golf becomes a Passat etc. It gets even more confusing when an enormous Golf, with limited off road capability becomes an Audi Q7. Or is it Q8? Who cares?!
I'd just rather LR didn't do this.

JLR know that they can do no wrong at the moment. They know that their product almost sells itself and they are taking full advantage of this.

The only thing that will slow them down is if China goes into recession and we have a global downturn.

LR see themselves as a purveyor of luxury SUVs these days. If they can ignore "poor" buyers in favour of rich ones then they will. Higher prices mean higher profits. Bear in mind that many components are shared across the range; this gives more profit of course along with things like charging £1000 for timed climate which can be activated for peanuts aftermarket.

I bought the Disco Sport, almost £40k and I really couldn't see where it went.

I agree. I think it was a pity they binned a car like the Freelander 2. It targetted a market that had been ignored, those that could afford £20k to just over £30k. A lot of them then went onto purchase a bigger LR when they could afford it.

LR didn't fill that gap for some reason. I think it was very remiss. They might be able forsake those potential customers, but surely a better business decision would have been to broaden the brand reach?

Then this nonsence with the Disco. The D3 was well priced, I remember getting new one in 2008 for just over £20k, think it should have been £25k. The D4 was a higher spec, but over £40k, now we have the prospect of a £50k starting level D5! There's a lot on the forum that wouldn't spend that amount or haven't got the money.

I know it's all speculation, but I don't think we are far off the mark. The motoring publications that predict that price too. Hence people are worried they won't be able to afford a new D5, and are now buying run out D4's which aren't even discounted, counting themselves lucky. I mean, normally no one want a run out car. It depreciates greatly as soon as the new model is released.

That depends as if the new model is a dramatic departure from the old then they're not truly relative.

Gamble for me was waiting for the new one to find I didn't like it.

Not having a split tailgate would be a major downside for me... there are certain other aspects that really define the Discovery product and if they change too many of those then the USPs that appeal to me are eroded - then it's an open playing field for whatever the competition are doing.

As it is I absolutely love our D4, it's the ultimate evolution of this Discovery model, anything else will be a stepped departure.

The problem is the competition, or lack of it.

I recently came close to losing the plot with LR over the warping disc fiasco on my current D4 and starting thinking about alternatives. The closest I could find to the D4 was a FFRR or Toyota Land Cruiser V8.

I'm really hoping that LR will come up trumps with the Defender replacement. I'm sure that the D5 will be a great vehicle, but it seems likely that it might not be for me. Although I live in hope. I'm also not particularly keen on the fact that the D5 will almost certainly be more expensive.

I'm liking this, it will be the Skoda Kodiaq. Skoda say its pretty much prediction ready and there will be a scout version with a bit more body cladding.



The D5 will be way more than I really want to pay for a Discovery.

Thats squarely aimed at the Disco Sport, so its not really a comparison vs a D5.

Im just going to run my new Commercial for 4 years in the hope that LR bring out something thats suits my needs come Defender replacement launch in 2018/19.
