New High Pressure Pump and New Rear Diff

Our 2008 TDV6 Disco 3 has had an ongoing problem with faults flashing up on the screen. Loss of power, loss of gears, suspension going down, park brake error, HDC Fault etc. It required a restart and all was well. The fault never showed up when taken to the garage. It got progressively worse since the end of warranty, 6 months ago. We are on a trip across to WA with the van when eventually it got to the point that we have had to interrupt the trip and head to Brisbane to get it looked at by a dealer. No dealers out near Blackall. Actually no dealers between Brisbane and Darwin!
We took it to Austral in Brisbane and they diagnosed it as a faulty High Pressure Pump and in the process of road testing found that the rear diff was also failing. Austral were very good with us and had the High Pressure Pump replaced and a new Rear Diff put in within 2 working days. We resumed our trip and are now in Barkley Homestead on our way across to Darwin keeping our fingers crossed and $4739 poorer.
We wrote to LandRover asking for some help with the cost even though it was out of warranty. We believed that the Pump was an ongoing problem since getting the car but that it had never been diagnosed properly. We also thought that a car that was treated well, serviced regularly and had never done any strenuous 4WDing should not have a rear diff fail at 83000km.
LandRovers response was a curt NO, owing to the car being out of warranty and that we had not had it serviced by a LR Dealer so they only had our word that it had been regularly serviced. This is despite having sent copies of all the service receipts from the servicing agent. There was no Dealer in our town when we bought the vehicle so it required a 5 hour return journey to get it serviced. Our town now has a dealer since last year but we have been very happy with the 4WD Centre where it has been serviced and chose to continue with him rather than risk a new Dealer at that stage.
We think the LandRover Disco 3 is a wonderful vehicle but we will never buy another due to the lack of concern shown by LR and the lack of support for the vehicle. Reliability is not one of LR's strong points and there are not enough dealers in Australia to support an unreliable vehicle.
The whole reason for this long rant is to try to determine if the High Pressure Pump and the Rear Diff are common replacement parts. I would certainly like to know how many LR owners have had a similar problem.
Regards
Kerry

I think you need to search the forum for "HPF".

There have been many failures, it has been suggested that misfuelling or poor fuel might be the cause of some failures.

Ther was a recall on the HP fuel pump for MY08s. Did yours get done? If it didn't LR should do it for free. If it was done dealer who did it may not have got the tension right and it can cause the bearings to fail.

Recently LR have become right barstewards to out of warranty claims do not take no for an answer write to LR direct after you have done your research.

Make sure you have had the brake on done if you have oil in the servo.

Even if yours is outside the VIN range but a Euro IV engine they should still fix.

I wonder what servicing land rover would like you to have done to the diff ?
Unless it is a locking diff not due for oil change for 10 years.
Looking diff 120,000km so would not have been touched.
Mine is also a 2008 model but vin does not fall in range for pump replacement but does worry me it could happen sometime.
I would ask them how servicing would have effected either out come as you do not do anything to either of these untill 120,000km.

Money talks .................

It's interesting that when you're paying five grand for a fix , they can all get it together in 48 hours ,
but if it was warranty you'd be waiting beyond the Queen's Birthday weekend for a diff etc.
I'm not suprised that you got no assistance ; if you had extended warranty the Company would
probably have said it was wear and tear. You'll have to view this as a running cost ( take off $2500
for " extended " that you didn't buy ; softens the blow ..... ) and since the alternative is buying
some other $80k vehicle ( or a Pajero ! ) to tow with , it's the cheapest route.
Rear diff failures are waaaay less than fronts. .... I'd have held fire on the rear diff . When YOU can
hear a problem , it's time to act .

Kerry,
see my thread here:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic68823.html
about how my dealer picked up on my failing diff and had it done under extended warranty.

NOTE that the service guy said that although 70,000Km was a little early, it was within the expected time for it to wear out!!

So at 83,000 yours must be one of the better ones!!
 regards
Peter

Many folks don't realise but under consumer law they have to fix if "there was a reasonable expectation for it to last longer" The HP pump they should fix as it is likely to be the issue in the recall the diff you can argue but you need to be agressive. Manufacturers will usually contribute to make you go away. If you have a friendly lawyer write a letter for him to put on letterhead. Idea

My wifes Mazda CX7 was well out of warranty ...as in years...and still had only done 70K..

I am still trying to remember what it was but it was quoted by the agent as a $1000 bill but they would try Mazda to see if they would come to the party..

And to Mazda's credit..they did..it didn't cost us a cent.

I am a landy fan forever but if I ever had to buy the wife another car I would get a Mazda.

Landrover need to acknowledge known problems a bit better!

Thanks for Replies

Many thanks to all of you for your replies. I was interested to hear that there had been a recall on the HPP and will follow that one up. We are well into our trip and have intermittent cell phone reception so will not be able to pursue the issue until we get home in a few months time. It is spoiling our trip to have to argue with LR while we are "on the road" and we have planned this trip for some time and don't wish to ruin it at this stage.
I will, however, be pursuing this issue aggressively when we get back home as the response from the guy we dealt with at LR was so glib and uncaring that it got our backs up. He did not want to deal with us by email and preferred to phone us while we were on the road between Mt Isa and Cloncurry. Difficult to think and rationally argue when we are towing a van.
Thanks again for your support and info.
Regards
Kerry

I lived in Cloncurry for a year in 1994.
If you can try to explore some of the old mine sites South of the h/way between Mt.Isa and Cloncurry including fossiking for "Maltese crosses" and then continue on following the track to old town sites. very interesting history around here.

Very interested in any info you wish to share on your way to Darwin.
Will be heading from Rockhampton to Darwin with any luck next Saturday towing a large Majestic semi off road caravan.
Only want to spend 4 days to get up there as I want to be up there before the V8's, but will have 2.5 weeks to get back to the V8's at Townsville.
Do not have longrange fuel tank so interested in fill up places after Mount Isa.
Also interested in any good overnight camps powered or bush as we have own shower etc and set up for bush camping.
Also places I should not miss.
Hope the rest of your trip is safe and trouble free.
The advise can also be from anyone else that has been through that way.

I was heading East from Three Ways, NT to Mt Isa in Dec 2010 and was running into a head wind. I ran out of fuel (but not completely), just about 20km short of Mt Isa. A bit of gear on the roof wouldn't have helped. I emptied a jerry can into it and kept going. I suggest filling up in Camooweal. Exclamation

A friend just went through there last week and there are major road works along this road at the moment - around Avon Downs, so be warned.

Regarding the HPFP replacements - yes, I think I must hold the record for the most number changed in one vehicle! The dealers were initially blaming poor fuel (Caltex and later Shell), even though it turns out the fault was with the design of the front bearing. The last replacement I had done was in October 2010 - on this one:

Just for laughs... this was the first time I reported the HPFP problem:
