well...my first set were replaced a couple of months ago...at 32k - as in kilometers (and 15 months old)... Shocked

Dealer mumbled something about "well, if you are going to use it the way you do...."
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

Your friend is quite right Harlequin, when asbestos was withdrawn from brake friction material the substitute produced a harder material. This gave rise to discs and drums wearing much sooner than usual. It is a trade off when they manufacture brake lining material, the softer the lining, better the braking and less wear on the drums and discs but the lining wears out quicker. The harder the material the more effort to brake is required, the drums and discs wear out sooner but the lining lasts alot longer. Both vehicle and brake manufacturers have to try and hit a balance when the brakes are designed. However that was some time ago and technology in this type of material has definately moved on. Getting back to your service, when the technician inspects the brake pads he will also check the discs to see if they are within LR tolerances. If they are not the dealership have no option but to tell you what they have found, and their recommendation and it would be your decision as to what you want them to do. They have to safe guard themselves. At an alternative garage then an alternative approach can be discussed with an experienced mechanic and it is possible that the discs need not be changed at that point.

Thanks for that confirmation. Bottom line is that I don't mess about when it comes to safety and as far as I am concerned, if the dealer recommends new discs, then that's what happens (and did). Although I have retained the old discs, I'm not even going to bother checking them. Not worth it. The new discs are on and brake performance is much improved. Incidentally, the technician also checked the ??valve for oil contamination which I believe I have read elsewhere is about to become the subject of a recall. One way or another, braking performance is now back to what it should be.

17mm rear and 27mm front (I think) are the minimum thickness.

Would anyone know what the starting thicknesses are on a new set of front & rear discs? There's definitely a pronounced "lip" of about 1mm around the edge of my front discs after 47k mls.

Just been told that - following my 30k service I need new discs and pads - the dealer said "only" £350....

Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Worth shopping around, or doing myself? (nb It has to be ridiculously simple for me to do myself - new sidesteps are about the furthest i have gone in terms of working on the vehicle myself!)

That's not the worst price TBH, parts alone must be over £200 - TFC or independent may be cheaper but not by hundreds of pounds Thumbs Up

If that is including using genuine LR parts, then it is a very good price Thumbs Up
