New Forest

looking at taking the family camping at Whitsun and I am looking at the New Forest.

Having looked at websites and possible camping sites SWMBO seems keen on one called Holland Wood which has 600 pitches.

Personally I prefer the smaller family run sites but anything for a quiet life.

Has anyone stayed at this site and if so have any comments on it

Thanks

Yea I know the new forest very well
Been going there for 30odd yrs Laughing
Hollans wood is quiet, apart from a main road running by it. Quite lacking in facilities but you are properly in the trees Thumbs Up

Go past Hollands Wood, past Balmer Lawn and take a left and about 3 miles on your right is Round Hill, close to the plain. We stay there every year and whilst it is close to the trees, it's not in them and the views are exceptional and the horses run through the site every evening, there's even a small lake where they go to drink.

I've stayed in both and much prefer Round Hill.

Stayed on this site before very nice. A337 next door pain in backside with traffic into Lynhurst. Apart from that, good base to see every thing in the area... Thumbs Up

If you need to be close to a good real ale pub you could try the Red Shoot Inn, which has a campsite. Does small but get busy and booked up early though.

Hollands wood is great. Nice pitches and it has the feeling of a small site. The washing amenities are excellent and there are some good pubs and restaurants a short walk into Brockenhurst. Its also very safe for kids and they'll love seeing the ponies wandering around the site. Very Happy

The only things I would recommend are tough tent pegs and a good hammer - the ground can be quite hard.

Just an update on my original post

Just back from 5 days in the New Forest staying at Holland wood site

Great place to visit and reasonable weather

As for campsite

Good points :
Certainly true camping in the forest
Horses and cattle roam through site
Quiet at night in respect of other campers noise ( see also below )
Good shower facilities
Within walking distance of Brokenhurst with pubs , shops etc
Bike rides direct from site into the forest

Bad points
No onsite shop for essentials
Noise from road and nearby railway line does keep you awake at night if you are not used to noise
Ground can be hard so take good quality tent pegs

On the whole a good site

Glad you enjoyed your stay.

The New Forest is certainly my favourite part of the country.

I was also there at weekend, I did see a D3 by the furtherest shower / toilet block.
I've been a few times, great for the kids, we did Go Ape at Moors Valley which is brilliant.

Did however have to pack up in the rain on Sunday AM Sad

That was probably me dropping the wife and daughter off for a weeks camping while working, there to set up the camp for her. About midday onwards and left about 4 after lunch and back home to Bracknell.

Wife came back this afternoon as proved just a bit too windy for the Outwell overnight, winds were 75mph and it got properly scary but no harm done

They're going back tomorrow to try to put the tent back together and stay a few more days and I'm going back Saturday to pack up
