"New" EGR failure symptom
Well new to me anyway! Mrs DSL's car is in for gear selector issues and FBH not working, mentioned that when cold there is a lot of fumes from the back end, so much so that it's like thick fog. Steam type fumes, not blue smokey diesel smoke or oily fumes. Fumes go after warmed up.
Diagnosis: RHS EGR failure and being replaced (cheers Tesco!). New one on me, anyone else had this?

The EGRs have coolers that use the engine coolant to cool down the exhaust gases before they are piped back into the inlet.
They quite often crack and leak water - maybe yours are leaking water into the exhaust gas tubes and it is then burning off this excess moisture causing white smoke/steam??

Wouldn't that result in a loss of coolant?? Will have a look at the level once it back. I assume/hope a new EGR valve would sort this.

I think that coolant loss is generally the main symptom of a cracked EGR cooler.
It isn't actually the EGR valve itself that's faulty....however, I think they replace the whole assembly that contains both the valve and the cooler (so hopefully you'll get a brand new valve unit too )2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

OK new RHS EGR valve replace ( Frank Ogg & Tesco) and no cloud of mist setting off at +5c this morning after collecting car. Also FBH is working after all the errors deleted and gear shift probl is sorted! So far so good.
Got home, parked up, aplied EPB etc then shut car down. After 10 sec or so turned ignition to pos II as wondered what mpg was reading to have the car undergo a hissyfit. Temp needle shot to the top of the guage then shot to middle, got Transmission fault, limited gears available and a big F and got Parkbrake Failure in rapid succession! Went in to have a cuppa, came out & all was well! Ghost in the machine??

My 57 reg D3 is losing coolant. Dropped about an inch on the resevoir over an 8 week period. Went to dealership and they pressure tested hot and cold but found no leak. So they topped it back up and told me to monitor.
BUT they had to make a note on my file that they weren't sure the lights that are in my front grill could be to blame . I then said it was losing coolant not overheating and the lights had been on for 12 months and coolant loss has onlt been in the last 2-3 months.
I then spoke to the VERY helpful parts manager and he gave me an idea of where the leak might be. ^^^^^^^^. Looking at the above it seems to be the same. Will keep an eye on the exhaust in the mornings now. HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE
