Sorry, I'm a newbie and I just want to have a shout
MY NEW D3 WILL NOT BE DELIVERED ON SATURDAY
GRRRRRRRR
I'm soooooooo excited about my new D3 and was expecting to pick it up on saturday but got back to work yesterday and the stealer emailed me to say it won't be ready :
Quote:Your new Discovery has still not arrived, I have been on the phone to
Land Rover, the reason of the delay is although the vehicle has been
built, it has not finished the conversion in special vehicles
My first ever new car and first ever disco.
I've always wanted a LR since as long as I can remember.
To top it all my wee sis phoned this afternoon to say it's snowing in Edinburgh
And all I get is cold
Feel a little better now after that rant........hoping for next Saturday Soon.....D3 XS Commercial...Stornoway Grey...Auto..Sat Nav...PTI...iPod doc...Leather...heated deats...Company Car...but not too many £'s to GB ..a true Scotsman..born & bred

Hmm, 'spose so, thought they'd do that on the line but maybe they just leave out the bits that aren't needed and SV do the rest

the vehicle goes down the line, the basics are put in, ie front seats, rear boot floor and side panels, then just before the end its taken off and driven round the corner of the site to another building where the two piece bulk head is screwed to the floor brackets of the two front seats, the plastic inserts are put into the frame of the existing glazed windows (note no toughened, blacked out windows as per disco 2 td5) and hey presto, there's your vehicle with the plate on the inside of the engine bay saying "LR Special Commercial)....... easy isnt it!!!
Just a quick question though, what are you using the D3 COMMERCIAL for, I hope NOT for towing for "hire & reward"????

Not bad of course, having just collected my D3 last night and towed my TD5 Commercial on the back, its ace!!!
The reason why I mention it is the legal aspect of towing without a tacho and the fact that the law as of April 2007 states that any vehicle registered after the 1 May 2006 has to have a digital tacho fitted and not an anologue tacho which of course you cant fit a digital tacho in a Disco TD5 NOR a D3!!! (you can fit one on the new defender as it has a ford transit engine)
Hence our reason for buying a pre-1st May 2006 Disco3, so we can lift the one from our outgoing TD5 Commercial.
Big, Big, Big fines if VOSA catch you driving without one: £2500 to the driver for driving without the correct recording device and £2500 to the business for not having one fitted
VOSA have even written to the Minister For Transport in Oct 07 asking him to confirm the goverments position on towing vehicles with a gross train weight of more than 3500kg and less than 7500kg, given that a lot of these vehicles were not designed for tacho's........ answer was to uphold the Law so VOSA are due to start a large campaign in the next few months specifically targeting such vehicles along with ensuring that the vehicles are not overloaded (remember, the weight of each axle when loading your towing vehicle/trailer) coz that's another £300 fine with the possibility that at worst, your vehicle will have its load impounded
So whether its a Disco 3 commercial OR just a normal D3 you need you're tacho

I've got a 54 plate for the very same reason
Not fitted tacho yet but your words of warning remind me and will pushit further up the "to do" list.
Which type do you use / can you recommend?
Is there absolutely definitiely for certain no way of putting a digital tacho in? What if the "Hokey Cokey" really is what it's all about?

We've got a seimens, fitted by our local commercial mercedes dealership/workshop, Rygor Commercials.
Cost us just over £800 inc vat with a calibration certificate that lasts 2 years.
Good thing about Rygor is their opening hours..... 6.30 AM - 10 PM !!!!!
Job takes around 6 hours to complete, having it put in the top glove box rather than overhead although VOSA would rather it be visible but the technician said you just cant do that with these types of vehicles. At least in the glove box we have'nt had the dashboard damaged!!
Our outgoing TD5 has it under the drivers seat cos the vehicle had ICE system and the 6 stack CD was under the drivers seat with a power source and right next the gearbox!!
Regards the use of digital tachos for TD5/D3 the answer I'm afraid is NO NO NO!!! you cant fit them, siemens have been working with LR for over a year and cant resolve the issue as it gives a false speed recording!!
Hence the reason why production of the D3 Commercial has twindled to a "to order basis" cos they cant shift them (have a look in any LR Dealership, they have to now have a D3 commercial on site either as a demo or new in the show room!!)

Just a final point on tech bits, if you're pulling a trailer, make sure you're trailer doesnt weigh any more than 1020kg unladdened otherwise you're into an OPERATORS LICENCE as well !!!!
We run with a Brian James TT35 tri-axle and have taken the manual winch off coz we had a full width panel put on the tail which would have taken us over the 1020kg rule

crikey, glad i'm not towing, sounds a bit of a minefield.
Character, sounds like you might be the one to answer this :
Is it possible / easy to remove the plastic inserts from the rear windows of a D3 commercial?
I thought it might give a bit more "all-round" vision Soon.....D3 XS Commercial...Stornoway Grey...Auto..Sat Nav...PTI...iPod doc...Leather...heated deats...Company Car...but not too many £'s to GB ..a true Scotsman..born & bred

Presumably all these R&R that you have mentioned ONLY apply to cases of Hire and Reward? If i want to take my trailer and load up two or three tons of logs am I in the mire now?
