New Car Dilema
I have been offered good deals on two new cars - wondered what you guys think.
D3 XS Auto or Mitsubishi Outlander Elegance for £8500 less.
I know they are chalk and cheese but.........
I dont need to go offroad but I need 7 seats.
The Mitsubishi is 40 mpg, low emmisions tax, loaded with kit and obviously a lot cheaper.
The D3 is lovely quality and drives like my e class but is pushing the finances to the limit and I am a bit frightened by the new/future VED escalation effect on resale.
I have always wanted a Disco and my heart is saying D3 but my head Mitsubishi. I know some of you will say forget the resale value but this really is a big financial commitment.

Sounds like you have went through all the pros and cons and for what you require its the mitsu for you.
Posting on here is only going to get "D3 everytime" answers. Horses for courses mate. A D3 will not disappoint in any way, but if you bought the mitsu then every time you get passed by a D3 or see one parked up, you'll think..mmmm, maybe i made the wrong choice.
No car is worth stretching the finances for, except some bit of exotica that your heart can justify to your brain. Is a D3 that bit of exotica to you??

You know what jkp I'm ashamed to admit that the D3 always was my bit of 'exotica' until this latest Gordon Brown grab.
I have always spouted on about buying British and now find myself influenced by what is I know only a few hundred pounds tax, which I fear may result in an unacceptable loss on resale, because the anti 4X4 bandwagon is rolling downhill gaining speed.
I'm really p*ss*d off because I drove both these cars for the first time on friday and I was totally blown away by the D3, a vehicle locally produced and a world beater of its type.
I know you guys are biased but maybe by me even asking the question I want to somehow be pursuaded toward the D3 still.

go for the D3, stick 2 fingers (or just one if things are a bit tight) up at the nanny state and the doom mongers - you only get one life - live it 8) in safety, ability and perma
the Mitzi's 'OK' - the D3, as you say, is a 'World Beater'
and as for the anti's, yer they're rolling downhill gaining speed that's cos they don't have TC, TR, HDC won't be long before they hit the sharp U turn at the bottom and crash & burn! kers!

The main cost in running any vehicle is the depreciation (far more than fuel or road tax or finance). The D3 has pretty good residuals and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The cost of financing the extra purchase price, plus Road Tax and Fuel could easily be made good by a stronger residual value vesus the Mitsibishi. Check out what data there is on rates of depreciation (a good guide is to get a vehicle leasing business to give you monthly rates, the lower the rate the lower the expected depreciation). If the D3's rate is lower than the Mitsibishi, then I believe your head and heart may start saying the same thing. And if there is a bit of a gap, tell the dealer who is offering you the D3. You might be surprised at the possible extra discount on offer if they truly believe they are going to lose the deal.....Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Twincam, I have an XS auto and although I don't know the mitsu at all I have seen them from the outside!
All I can add to the argument is that my car is the best vehicle that I have ever owned and that when I see a mitsubishi or any other Jap 4X4 I know that I am in the class product!
Gives you a sort of superior feeling 8) !Back in the game!

In their defence Mitsubishi only claim the 2 seats at the back are 'occasional'.
They would be fine for my children.....but thats all.
There is no 'crumple zone' there is there?Back in the game!

As Smarticus says - look beyond list price - look at the whole (real) cost of ownership (& no, I don't know which wins, 'cos I don't care!) and take into account obscure things like how long tyres last.
for example, I went from a Disco 2 to an A4 tdi sport, to save fuel - and spent far more than my fuel savings on tyres!Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

I was very curious about the mitsu but the test drive was a huge disappointment.
From +/- 2800rpm the noice in the car is very dominant. Like an old bomber flying over at VERY low altitiude.
As well finishing of the interior was a bit too "old fashioned asian style"
I went for the new honda CRV as good all-road. No need to have 7 seats for my wife since we have a 7 seater disco. No need to be real off-road either for the same reason. Rather a good driving economic and save car that copes the poor state of the roads and winter here. In case of Honda CR-V, the delivery term seems to be a problem!
If I would need 7 seats but no off roading I would have a look at Mpv cars rather then outlanders or disco's.
If you like the idea of a 4x4 without needing it, have a look at the volvo xc90.
