Struggled today on very wet muddy grass on my worn AT3s. In mud and ruts I ended up having to back off a slight uphill climb and have take a different line. Traction control was working overtime and still ended up "stuck". Would new tyres have helped? Possibly.
One problem, I think is that I didn't have room / traction to get up decent momentum. That would probably have seen me through as I made it 70% of the way at low speed.
It's all good learning experience, however.
I would say that the SDV6 is not as good in such conditions as the TDV8 was.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

And the 2016 D4 with no limited slip rear diff is not as good as the 2009 D4 which did have it.
Thanks for the good info on here folks. I guess unless you're prepared to change the wheels each time the season/journey/surface changes it's going to be a compromise.
To add another improbable variable, I still have the 20-inch rims which came with the car with their Scorpion Zeros pretty much unused (<1000 miles) because I opted for an all season 3PMS in the GGAT3 R19 to avoid having to change wheels twice a year.
Maybe I should just go back to swapping the wheels, get chunky offroaders with 3PMS for winter and use the Zeros for summer.

I'm now thinking about putting some new tyres on soon for the winter (either the GG AT3 or Pirelli AT+ I guess) and then putting the worn GG AT3 back on in the spring - they've got 5mm left on them so good for a few miles more on warm tarmac and seems a waste to bin them early. The newer rubber will be then put back on later next year. Ought to be good for two winters that way.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Another vote for Cooper Weathermasters as an all round great tyre. I have them on both of mine and prefer the 255/55 r20 to the 255/50 r20. (I have both)

Yeah RRSTDV8, that's what I'd like to do too but I am a set of rims short and I don't think it's worth the hassle to do without rims for each set of tyres.
I am pretty determined not to repeat the GG AT3 given the shortcomings I have found (not overlooking that I found them generally good overall) and to give me a chance to make a comparison for myself. So I'm going to look for a set of Pirelli All Terrain Plus or Cooper Weathermasters or maybe Duratracs forthwith 2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

I opted to down size my rims to 18” and fitted BF Goodrich 265/65R18 KO2s great in mud, going forward not bad on grass if you don’t mind a bit of damage, on side slopes and going down hills, not necessarily the tyres fault though, weight of car and the inability to lock centre diff unless in rock crawl, haven’t had them out in the snow yet, but we don’t get snow in Kent, it snows then compacts through traffic so it’s ice before you can blink.
Good tip carry a good Compressor And deflate your tyres, was marshalling at a sporting car trial Sunday very very slippery, the BFs allowed me to deflate to 10psi went everywhere except side slopes lolDiscovery 3 HSE 07

You bring up some good points PCT3.
Opening up the question, what tyre pressures do you all run at when off-roading on wet grass and mud, assuming no rocks?
I usually run the car at fully loaded pressures on road, and if off-road looks challenging i’ll reduce that by 10psi.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

I popped in to Costco Edinburgh yesterday to ask about Duratracs. They said they’re only available online and not in store, and only when the next delivery comes from Goodyear which is due to be at the end of January -ish.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

I generally don't change air pressures, to be honest. Most of my off road use is short stuff such as popping around filling feeders and checking on pheasants, or visiting sites. Changing pressures in such situations isn't really very practical. Even when spending a couple of days off road such as at Les Comes, I didn't bother changing pressures. Never had an issue with traction out there.
It's only really the wet grass / layer of wet mud on slippery hard mud that causes issues. It's like driving on ice.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Interesting for the Duratrac Costco info.
I’m waiting for the deal to come back so I can buy tyres again.
As for your issue. I run Duratracs all year round. Have done for almost 6 years and 85k.
I don’t have the money to consider 2 tyres so I picked what I thought was a good all rounder for my needs.
