Need to play somewhere!

Can anyone help?

Does anyone know of any good green lanes/fords or off road places immediately around and inside the London M25 area? I sometimes have an afternoon or morning free in between jobs, but don't know where to go play and splash around. Big Cry
I realise that one of the world's biggest cities is unlikely to yield many spaces, but there might be a few lurking.

Also is there a current, comprehensive guide to green lanes anywhere? I have tried looking, but have only come across sketchy information. Please help!

Ok I admit it, I'm a bit thick on this subject.
I have registered with Wayfinder and now don't have a clue what grid references to enter to find lanes near me.
Any help would be much appreciated before I kick my PC to death!

On the left there's a menu with "Grid Squares" on it. Click it!

You need to get some OS maps of your area, you can relate the Wayfinder information to your maps. You need to learn the OS Grid reference system to pin-point the tracks. There is help with this on the Wayfinder site.

Join GLASS or CRAG and use the local representative for information (Green Lane Association, or CRAG = Countryside Reacreational Access Group).

If you want to be really clever, you can buy Memory Map OS or Fugawi for your PC, you can then download routes and information as overlays, link your laptop or PDA to a BT GPS receiver, and have real-time moving maps on your device in the car, with the Wayfinder info overlaid.

One thing is for certain though, no matter what the map says, the signs on the ground should be heeded. If it says TRO or CLOSED, then don't drive it. Always best to ring up the local ROW officer and ask them if a doubtful route is open. Ignorance is no defence.

I think I'll have to spend some time on this when I can spare it.
I really fancy the opportunity to get far from the madding crowd with the family and a picnic.
Might need to wait for the weather to warm up so that my picnic excuse isn't immediately seen as a thinly veiled attempt to go off road. All looks like code at the moment, but I'm up for a bit of learning.

Sounds like we need a 'real' South East meet, rather than a West South East one Wink

Maybe find some lanes in Kent?

Stu, get it organised fella.
We're just one short of a crowd, anyone else out there wanna do a meet?
Must be some easterlings who need to dive into the D3 culture a bit deeper.

Might have to get someone a bit more experienced along, although I'm intending to do my LR Levels soon. I'll have a word with few of the 'old hands' at the weekend about how to organise a route, and we can check out the stuff Gareth suggested. I reckon Kent is probably better than Essex?

We might get Discoflo along with us.

I think you're probably right as "the garden of England" has a bit more up and down than the flatlands of Essex. Some experience would certainly be appreciated by me in the way of beer for knowledge bartering. I wonder if we'll find anyone?

You know this lot a bit better than I do, I thought that they'd all be useful but it seems you know better. I'll have to wait for you to give me the nod before I squander my hard earned on the less deserving. Gareth already has a pint at the bar considering his "wayfinder on my PDA" knowledge!
