You need a new Turbo and the EMU sofware needs updating

So says LR technical 9 months ago I had a problem with low power output and poor fuel consumption LR dealer checked the codes and said one of the EGR valves had gone faulty. Quote "its the side that doesnt go very often so we dont have stock". Part ordered and fitted appears to have solved problem. Now we roll forward 9 months and the car is pumping black smoke from both exhausts. Diagnostics plugged in "you need both EGR valves replacing" I mention the recently replaced EGR but they r insistent that it needs 2 now. In for replacement and it comes home with the same fault doing 18mpg an improvement on the 15 it went in with and less black smoke but still enough to cloak all following traffic. Back in and LR technical is now involved they crunch the numbers and come up with the solution "you need a new turbo fitted as the old one has broken its shaft due to the version of software in the EMU so will need to upgrade after fitting new Turbo. I am now getting a little suspicious and go on the net find this forum and make contact with bell auto services. "Go out to the car open the bonnet now look in front of the engine you will see a 4 inch pipe attached to the intercooler run your hands over it" Oh yes there's a split right along it "the problem is the diagnostics are only as good as the people using them and they didnt properly check what was happening" So I have now had 3 EGR valves fitted in 9 months and was supposed to have a Turbo and software upgrade probably costing £3000 inc VAT the turbo alone is £1200net. Needless to say i am not paying for the second 2 EGR fitting costs. Dont trust the dealer or LR technical double check and triple check that the work they propose needs to be carried out. The fix was a £35 pipe or you can buy a much better version from BAS for £95 inc delivery, that will be faster because guess what the LR version was not in stock!!!

Now What???

Having sorted out the main problems I still have several to sort.
1. There is a whistle in the inlet system when under load
2. Fuel consumption has dropped to 17.5 from 21

I have heard there are potential issues with carbon buildup in the turbo vanes upgraded software or cleaning the turbo being several suggestions

Any Idea

17.5?? Now I'm not a techie type but there are few things I'd try, indeed did as I was seeing my mpg steadily drop couple of years ago. Air filter?? Service schedule only changes them every 45k, mine was manky inside when I looked at it so now change them every 15k. Noticed an immediate improvement.

Brakes binding?? Take car on run long enough to get properly warmed up then carefully touch the back of your hand to the centre of each wheel. Any hotter than others, any hotter than Luke warm? Could be binding brake caliper (I've had 3 out of 4 replaced for binding, one where disk was glowing after only a few miles). Alternatively if hot could be a binding park brake.

Might be worth emailing 10forcash, our resident D3 Guru and spend a bit on getting things properly checked out.

Sorry - in your opinion is it worth blanking off the EGR's on a smooth running engine (05)? Will it prevent potential damage to the turbo in due course?

Definetly blank off the EGR, whish I could on my 2009 model, not sure if it would save turbo but would prevent brake down, poor running of good engine, why should run on its own exhaust fumes for part of each run, some believe the process improves fuel effeciency.
