Navigation System
Does anyone know if the Nav system will still be DVD based?
I found this in the instruction manual for the Nav system that makes me think not ..
"the Map Change area is for Dealer use only when a navigation hard drive update is being performed"
so, presumably, it will need a 'download' by a dealer every time map data etc is changed
(sounds expensive)

I have read somewhere that hard disk storage is the next thing for navigation and entertainment Not sure how true it is though.

it just means more guaranteed cash for the stealers as if you want/need an update to the sat-nav you have no other option but to go and pay whatever they want to charge. I fear that this will become common place in the car market. If in doubt............flat out.

The most annoying thing about a hard drive system will be the wasted time with the car off the road while you wait for the dealer to do the upgrades. If it is a hard drive there'll always be a way to copy or transfer files from other discs or drives, even if it means removing and plugging the drive into something else first. At the moment the dealers have guaranteed income by charging whatever they want for the DVD's. To copy either is illegal so what's the difference?
If they have any sense they'll be going down the SSD route (memory) rather than an actual hard drive which will mean no moving parts and a loss less to go wrong - Just think, Sat-Nav without that little clicking noise from under the passengers seat all the time!
Bring it on
(Now if they would only fit a USB socket and allow updates over the phone, they'd have a real winner with subscription income, and we could have up to date maps with speed camera data)2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux

so it looks like it's going to be a two-day at the dealers job and 'sorry we don't have a loan car unless you want an Aygo' instead of a 5 minute change of DVD's

On my Audi A5 HDD system the car gives me access. It has a 40GB drive of which 30GB is for the system and 10GB is for storing music. I can download MP3s etc to the HDD. I can also upload a version of the handbook. If I need to do a system update I just stick a CD in the CD/DVD drive and the car updates.
A HDD based system should be a step forward and if it is like the Audi system you do not need the dealer to do the upgrade.

HDD stores more data than previous DVD systems and customers can upgrade mapping data via Land Rover dealer electronic service systems (further information regarding the process to be released in due course).
From the pre-release specs on the D4...
So does that mean it's easier or harder to upgrade?2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux

Nav system any good?
Anyone know if the nav system will be upgraded from the D3 or is it the same. The ability to change the colours around or have a night setting (as in the Audi's) would be good. Also how about the algorithm for navigation. My D3 always gets horribly confused going from London to Gaydon for some reason

Sounds like the procedure should be quite user friendly.
Updates, or additional maps not on the HDD, will be available to buy via a website. Select what you want, and the system will relieve you of some money and produce a code. Take the code to your dealer, and they will then use this to update the system. The suggestion, as this is now a HDD based system, is that updates will not take long. Not clear if the purchase cost of the code covers the actual installation.
As far as I understand, this is not something that can be downloaded onto a memory stick and then installed that way. There is no connection between the USB port and the Nav HDD.

Does anyone know how to get the nav screen to set to North Up? On my D4 the screen keeps rotating to keep in synch with the vehicle moving, but I prefer North Up.
Pressing the little compass icon on the top left has no effect, nor does the voice instruction to the system.Paul
