Name that leak!

Hi folks

Past week or two noticed oil patches. Got under tonight and finally found this, front of vehicle, drivers side. Hidden up behind some metalwork.

I have yet learned the underside of the D3 but can anyone shed any light on what the source of the leak might be & what it'll likely need doing / cost to stop it Smile

All suggestions welcome (as long as they're not too expensive hahaha)

EDIT: Further looking at pictures on hear shows that I think the The horizontal tube shown in shot appears to come from the front diff, and I do believe I have the old style breather cap from the pictures on here too. Likely the two situations are related?

I had a similar leak and it seemed to be caused by the bearings in the front diff going.
I would also check if there is any play on the driveshaft on the other side of the diff.

It has been known and if you have the old breather, that overfilling the diff causes oil seal leak - so check diff oil level. If its up to the filler you have too much in there

Well I snipped the old breather cap off - didn’t her any hiss but then I was on the phone at the time haha. It appears to have stopped the leak as no more oil patches on the drive!

I still have the grinding / rubbing noise when on light throttle (or none) though and also a squeak when turning full lock, usually left lock. And some steering wheel wobble (like balance is out but it’s not, had them done 3 weeks ago) at certain speeds + when breaking from 70.

LHS wheel bearing was done 10k ago. RHS unknown. Took it to my indie & they heard it but reckon no play not wheel bearing! And I concur there was no play but that’s not always definitive on D3 hubs is it?!

Also seems the inner CV on the LHS is throwing some grease out. Boot looks OK but obviously isn’t. Wonder if a dry CV joint could be the cause of my squeak on turning & the rub/grind noise on light throttle.

Any thoughts from anyone? You can tell I’m trying to avoid it being a dickered diff can’t you?!
