MY11 D4 Ticking sound, cold start |
|
Has anyone had this ? If so what was it ?
Seems to come from somewhere between the FBH and the engine. Low down.
When the FBH kicks in its like this, when it doesn't, you get one 'ticking' sound the stops. Sound doesn't appear to be coming from the FBH itself though.
Nor does it appear to be anything striking the fan.
Doesn't happen on a warm start.

Yes I have a 2013 and before a 2005 D3 and also have a lot of experience with boats and trucks, there is a separate small inline fuel pumps that sounds like a constant tick when the FBH is running, this is completely normal.

I've had two D3's and now the D4 but never heard anything like this noise before.
Will let the dealer know so they can check it.
Cheers

Seems it was the viscous fan nothing to do with the FBH.
Changed the fan and cowling.
Engineer manually triggered fan and replicated the sound.
Seems all good now.

I had the exact same noise when I collected my new D4 during handover today. It didn't do it on the test drive last week.
It was whisked back to the workshop and came back with no 'tick'. It was explained to me that as the air con hadn't been used for some time then a pulley was catching on a air con pipe..... mmmm I'm not sure an air con pipe should be anywhere near a pulley anyway.
I drove it home and all was fine. But this evening I went out in it and the 'ticking' is back
Thoughts ? Back to the dealer for a proper look? cheers,

The air con pulley clutch does make a click at first start up but this wasn't the issue I had. Not had a recurrence since the viscous fan and cowling were replaced.

Thanks Simon.
That's exactly what the noise was described as being to me. It just seems really odd that a noise like this is produced from a high value vehicle - its also blinking annoying and continues until I engage the air con... cheers,

They should fix it under warranty then I guess
Make sure you document the sound with a video.
Get them to manually trigger the viscous fan. Thats how Shukers found the problem. Great dealer. Used them for over 15 years now. Exemplary service.
Hope this thread helps you sort it
