If your going to get Comp insurance for the next couple of years,
You could get a cheap one now.

I worked as a "Windscreen Fitter" in the UK with RAC many years ago.

Not all glass is created equally.

Depending how complex the glass is, will dictate how many % refits there are for any car.

Cheaper glass can often mean that there are some parts in the screen where the view is "Distorted".
New VW Beetle was really bad for this, and all front windscreens had to come from VW as nobody could make them error free.

My Advice.
Since you are willing to go to Germany to have it replaced, search "guardian frontscheibe qualität" and see what the germans say.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are usually around 20 different screens for each car.
90% of cars have a very very small tint to their glass, 80%+ are green, some are blue, and some are clear.
Also... depending on if your car has rain sensors or not, this would be different models.
And of course heated windscreen.

Sometimes in "Cross over years" like from D3 to D4, there are an even wider variety with random things.

Make sure the screen has the Mirror Mount already on the screen. some dont come with it.

Also, storing and transporting a screen is not an easy task.
You cant just "Lay it down" anywhere, and will require some careful handling to ensure you dont over stress the glass.

I can't speak for CH but having spoken to the guy who fitted my windscreen a couple of years ago he said that screens themselves aren't terribly expensive (a few hundred quid). He wanted to set up his own business installing screens but the big firms have quite a monopoly on supply and the links to the big insurers. He said he could undercut them job for job by hundreds. (He said).

I don’t doubt it for a minute, I know a guy who fits screens, but only high end vehicles, Rolls, Lamborghini, Ferrari, also coaches. Six years ago a Pilkington D4 heated was less than £500, but likes of Autoglass have the insurance companies sewn up, the little man can’t get in, hence he specialises in the cars that the owners wouldn’t want the big boys to touch.

Well this has been a complete disaster. It leaks. It leaks plenty.

The Garage:
Unfortunately GB-Autoservice-Schopfheim, 4.7* based on 22 Google reviews have not made it easy to determine if there was anything actually wrong with the glass.

The work:
* Dash cracked around dash top air vent on passenger side. Almost as if someone would be stupid enough to have stood on it.
* The roof paint. There were rust spots above the windscreen in the centre which were repaired. The paint is slumped in this area, and the finish is visibly lumpy. Maybe this would impact the seal. Also it is unclear if they sanded the whole top edge as there are signs of either overpainted small bubbling or paint trash. And there is at least one crater not filled flush before paint.
* The seal has a visible nick in the top of it. Would they have been stupid enough to reuse the old seal? I bought replacement external A pillars and a top of screen seal before going to garage. When I got the car back the new Land Rover top of windscreen seal I had bought was in its packaging unopened in the boot.

The Glass:
Which wasn't Pilkington as was explicitly spoofed on Ebay with no consequence to the seller, or the Guardian Glass the seller subsequently confirmed it to be. It is "Splintex".

Other:

There was primer overspray from work on some other vehicle along the whole passenger side of car.

I'll contact the garage today to find out if this can be un- Censored !
