Not that I usually give it too much thought.. but with diesel prices going through the roof I was keen to check what the MPG was on Trip B (one that hasn't been reset).. and over the last 4000 miles, my Disco has been averaging 25.7 MPG.. Not bad but not exactly good!! I feel the manufacturers original estimations for this new 3.0 may have been optimistic somewhat. Still better than my 2.7 D3 doing 22.8 MPG ... Just expected it to be higher... maybe i am in SPORT too often

Ive done about 12,000 miles in my D4 - mostly motorway driving, and i'm averaging 27.4. I havnt worked it out properly yet though.
Put £20 in on the M6 the other day @ £1.47 litre Duncan

Id be much happier with an extra 2-3 mpg... myabe it'll increase in the summer, my pre heater seems to damage fuel economy badly and it seems to be on quite alot on the colder mornings!
Maybe Im just being miserable... Im not ordering my Nissan Leaf for a while yet!!!

only got 3,200 miles on the clock, but that does inlcude a trip from the bottom of the M6 to Edinburgh and another one to the French Alps and back. Overall, averaging 27.2 since purchased, the long journeys averages 27.4. The French one inlcuded sitting for 6-hours at 74MPH on cruise control, only stopping for the toll booths three times.
One annoying thing, is the tank is 10-litres smaller (I think), sure the D3 was 70-litres from fumes, where-as the D4 is only 60 and a bit. Distance to empty on full is 416 miles generally (and the French trip proved this correct); would have been nice with the extra fuel economy to have got an extra 100 miles as well. 11 HSE Santorini Black

Over the past 2000 miles I have averaged between 26.2 and 26.3 mpg - It goes up and down between the two. When new, I managed 29.9 on a carefull 320 mile run from Cornwall up the M5 & M6. Tried my best to get to 30.0 mpg but decided it wasn't worth carrying on North for the sake of .1 and knowing the next day it would only drop again.
My Discovery 3 was down to 22.5 most of the time so it is almost a 20% improvment with the Discovery 4. Not quite enough to pay the 100% increase in road tax between the two cars.
Never tried filling it up and checking how many miles a tank will do - just in case the "old fashioned way" shows less
Also can some one tell all the fuel stations they have the prices wrong - sure the last budget said the cost of a tank of fuel would increase to £75. If so, where do we claim our £25 refunds please.

I think most of you guys are conning yourselves if relying on the trip computer for your MPG.
I have worked out my MPG from new by checking it at the neck when filling.
The trip computer is consistently between 3.2 and 3.9 MPG on the wrong side.
I have used only 11 tanks of fuel from new. Lowest MPG was 19.1 and highest 26.1
Not really a worry when you're losing 8K a year in the cars value !

My D3 is still returning me up to 35MPG on a run. I have had it chipped a couple of years back by JE Engineering over in Coventry, and I immediately noticed improvement not only in power and responsiveness, but also better MPG.
As far as the on-board computer goes - I have found mine to be fairly accurate, maybe 1 MPG on the optimistic side. I think the main problem is that you need to fully fill the tank - which takes a lot of patience at the pumps and also calculate MPG over a couple of tankfulls, without zeroing the trip computer.
On one occasion, which I have never been able to repeat, I did get a reading of 40MPG, and at that stage had consumed three quarters of the tank. 100% motorway driving, feathering the throttle as much as possible and not using cruise control. Also to get the very best MPG, you should always use the command shift mode rather than D, and put the car into 6th gear at the earliest point (about 48MPH), and keep the revs to just below 2000RPM. Give it a try in your D4 and check the difference (I would recommend JE for the chip upgrade).

The onboard computer is actually set at about 3-3.5% optimistic. The only way that you will actually find out how much fuel you are really using is a tank fill-to-tank fill check.
Having had a manual D3, then an auto D3 and now a D4, I can say that the D4 is better (at this stage in its life) than that D3 auto, but still trails the D3 manual. Over it's life, the D3 manual averaged ~27.5, the auto ~25.5.
The best I have done on a tank full is just under 28 with the D4 - and the computer said 31.2.

Drove in the past 2 days around 300 miles in the D4. 50% motorway and dual carriage way up to around 34.9 MPG in that stretch. (moved back to trip A for a more accurate view of day to day MPG) Includes Lakeland country lanes and dome dual carriageway moments in sport! (A4 2.0 TDI Thought "I'll pass this breeze block on wheels with ease", little did he know it's a 3 litre twin turbo with 600nm, couldn't keep up ) So not driving overly gently either! Can't complain! A big difference over winter consumption of mid 20s. Think that was due to slow snow driving and the fact it's only 15 mins to work every morning so that is a short run.
Normally not doing a big run like that's it sits at 29-30mpg going to work since after winter (reckon it's that pre heater thing) So I reckon if the computer exaggerates Thats about 26 27 mpg normally and about 32-33 I got today!
Impressive for such a heavy car! I have a friend with a Navara, he is doing well to get 22MPG!
(Know what I'd rather be sitting in )
Mind going over both Honister and Kirkstone pass the "Instant fuel" made for some dissapointmemt saw 6MPG on the odd incline

1089 miles two tankfulls average 24mpg motorway with speeds up to 175kph on long autobah stretches
Pretty good hmmm
Doing it again soon on MTRs might be slightly louder a bit slower an more costly but permagrin remains

Well 108 MPH 175 kph is moving a Disco along at a fair pace! I'd expect a little drop in MPG, the wind resistance will ne increased at that speed! I have never driven a Disco at those speeds but often wonder whats the gearing like is it right up at high RPM! I know it's dead relaxed at 70MPH

That why i love it regardless known issues
German autobahns let you do it pretty safely along with most drivers there sharing same driving methods
At higher speed engine keeps to above 2500 rpm but do not remember exact numer and have to say ATRs were awesome well recommened tyre
So who cares about little extra consumed when driving such a awesome beast

Did a trip from Glasgow to Aberdeen (all up hill ) last week approx 320 miles and then a few days round the doors before Friday night fill up and caluclated using the litres to fill to miles travelled and I got 25.55 mpg. Motorway speed 70-75 cruise control with the odd 80 take over speed. Funnily enough the computer on the Abrdeen trip on the road down read 29.9 mpg, never quite got the thirty.
I need to double checks this but I'm sure a couple of weeks back in the Carlisle area doing about 60 I was getting about 36 according to the computer. Discovery 4 XS Santorini Black, Almond and Arabica, Reversing Camera, Spare Wheel, arrived 250311

If the computer is 4MPG out. That means in winter I was getting about 20-21 MPG
And my D3 used to (the 4mpg out calculation again) got 18.8
Now I am getting 28/29 round the doors so I am actually doing 24/25
Still, nevermind, it's my hobby
