Yeah I drove down a few years back and there was plenty of snow on the slopes but roads well pretty clear certainly didn't use chains although we did take them just in case.

if you don't have winter tyres, take chains. You won't need 'em but if you don't have 'em, you will need 'em (quoting sods' law here Wink)

At 1032m you shouldn't need chains in Chamonix unless the weather is exceptionaly severe - however in some high altitude resorts it is a legal requirement to carry and if required use chains.

I purchased chains prior to my last alpine visit - needless to say they weren't needed, even when ascending snow covered roads.
Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

The roads are very well cleared but sometimes the snow gets ahead of them. Especially if you're travelling at night. Went to Les Gets last year in a bit of a convoy ML270, XC90 x2 and a Disco 3. The roads were getting bad and we were stopped by the police and told to put snow chains on all of the vehicles apart from the Discovery. A friend asked "How come he doesn't have to use them" the policeman waved him on and said "he has a Land Rover" I wish I had had a video camera, LR would have used it as an advert.

Was that why i bought a D3 4 months later Whistle

Been to that area 4 or 5 times now. It is a legal requirement to have chains. If the snow is bad the police will create a road block to ensure cars fit chains before climbing up into the mountains, however they usual wave proper 4x4s through. We don’t take chains and have never needed them. That’s done it Rolling Eyes

Talking about a D3 and snow and 4x4ing is certainly not Off Topic in fact its more On Topic than a certain chocolate bar that has a hazelnut in every bite.
