Move from Freelander 2 to D3

Hi everyone. New member here but long time member of Freel2.com.

I have a 2011 Freelander 2 which I love, but it isn't a D3. I've always wanted a D3. My budget would be whatever I sold the Freelander for.

I should add, I do need a 4x4, but I don't need a D3. But every time I see one I just want one.

So, as with all cars, they can have their problems. My Freelander certainly has. Would you expect a D3 (which had been correctly maintained) to be any more expensive to look after than a Freelander 2? I'm so close to just doing it but it could be a costly mistake!

Literally how long is a piece of string question.

Mine been pretty good over 4.5 yrs but now needs a few k spent on it, tbh a few k that most sensible people would not spend on such an old car, and thats the kind of car you have to avoid buying!

Pretty sure if you asked on here there would be someone near you who maybe would not want to commit to helping you check one out in case it wen tits up! but maybe they would show you what to look for on their own car and how it should drive etc.

Dont forget running costs, ie town 20mpg, high 20s on a run, if after 55 plate 570 road tax, tyres 150 quid each and so on.

Thanks for the reply. I know it's a pretty vague question, I'm just trying to get talked out of it 😂😂

I don't do a huge number of miles but yeah the economy isn't that great to say the least.

Mpg can be the least of your worries Mr. Green I now only do about 7k per annum so I no longer think about mpg at all.

I would not jump in with both feet, spend some time reading every fresh post on here to get a feel for what to potentially look for.

I like Land Rovers a lot, but even I have to admit my wifes Audis are one hell of a lot better running cost wise, as they never seem to go wrong, whereas the Land Rovers always have a snag list that never really gets any shorter.

Thing is, the Freel2 site is loaded with daily problems as well, most of which my and many other FL2 have not experienced. I'm also reasonably happy doing smaller jobs myself as long as I don't need a lift for anything big.

My wife has always had Audi's and has just got a new A3 and they have always been lovely, but I get no joy from them. I love the command position the most and just love the utility feel. I don't like bling.

Have a look on here. At least you will find cars with a known history that are generally well looked after.

Service history is key, mileage less so but a deep wallet is essential. They are not cheap beasties to run. Thumbs Up

I think the deep pocket thing is the key. I don't mind higher running costs, I'm happier to pay for happiness Laughing , I just don't want to repairing it any more than any other car that age or my FL2. Or at least I don't want it constantly off the road as I do rely on it.

Don’t do it. I swapped my FL2 for a D4 about 5 years ago. I’m now in the position that I will sell my wife and children to keep it going, rather than part with it.

I would stick with a freelander.

Much more reliable.

If you don't have spare money, you are likely to be in a world of pain buying a D3.
Likely to need a few £1000 spent in the first months

So if you don't need the size of the D3 avoid!
You have a good compromise.

I have an FL2 and a D3 on the family fleet... the FL2 is considerably cheaper and more reliable than the D3.. be prepared to spend big owning one...

I wouldn’t do the jump from an FL2 to a D3 but I would do a jump from an FL2 to a D4...

Owned our FL2 for 10 months now. All it has needed is fuel (and screenwash, apparently Laughing)

The D3 on the other hand, was usually in bits at least once a month Laughing
