Mounting CB antenna

Any hints/tips on antenna mounting? I've got a S/S gutter mount and plan to place the bottom lip of this beween the roof rail and the inside lip of the expo rack. Will I be able to get a reliable ground plane this way, or will I need to start getting inventive?
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

get some 1"x1/4 flat bar weld a bolt in one piece this slides in the roof rails 2 holes in the other piece 1 for the arial the other clamps onto the roofrail with a wing nut .job done

Just bolt onto the expo rack, you can use the t-track for ease don't worry about the groundplane for CB, the rack will be more than adequate

here is a simple way to do it

As the roof rail is powder-coated/painted, will I not still need to scrape of some of the finish to get a ground off that? Confused

Seems such a long time ago, when I bolted an antenna to my 1979 VW Polo.... Embarassed

forget the gutter mount, a flat plate with an M12 x 20 coach bolt in the roof rail will do it. fix the antenna mount to that over the rear of the panel joining trim. the coax screen provides an earh connection and with a base loaded coil you don't need a huge ground plane

ISTR that I had to replace the quick release plastic thingy with a M10 nut and bolt because my pre-soldered PL259 plug wouldn't fit properly with it in place Wink

I figured it would be useful when offroading in groups (and I got it at a decent price thanks to NonStickNick Thumbs Up ). More chance of groups staying in touch as they are spread out over Salisbury Plain or all over Leics, Derbs, Northants etc on a Nav Event than with PMR. A 2M setup is overkill for what I need it for.
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Got the antenna mounted ok, then stuck the SWR meter on it. 10! Bloomin' 10! Multimeter was showing intermittent continuity across the mount end so stripped the mount down, found corrosion everywhere so got busy with the steel wool, reassembled it and SWR was coming up at 3.2 Rolling Eyes

So off comes the antenna, nibbling away at it with bolt croppers 1/4" at a time and I finally get it down to 1.1 - 1.3 across channels 1-40, with channel 20 showing 1.2 Thumbs Up

Now the bad bit. When I picked up the gear from Non Stick Nick we quickly mounted everything up and did a quick test transmission to the cb in his car.... at what must have been an SWR of 10. So I'm guessing the transmitter circuit is likely to be fried Big Cry

Transistors on the broadcast circuit are fine; left the rig in the car today and when I got into "civilisation" had a very brief chat with some drag-crazed nutter in Poole as I passed through the town.

Still think I need to work on the SWR as range and quality were rubbish (about 2 miles when on high ground driving towards the transmitter with him offset to my right, which corresponds with the ground plane as the antenna is mounted rear left). It dropped to around half a mile once I'd passed the transmitter. I'm guessing I should set infinity so it bounces off the end stop rather than the needle hovering on the infinity marker on the meter
