MOT Failure - and not yet 4 years old!!

My vehicle - bought brand new July 2015 (MY16) went in for service and MOT today.

Received an email with 'vehicle health check' video - knew it wasn't going to be good news! - and yes - failed MOT on rear prop shaft bearing Big Cry Big Cry Can't believe it - 22,000 miles and never used off road.

Can't remember reading anything on this forum about such a failure (may have missed it though)

Shaken my faith in the product - again!

So £495 + vat and 1 hour plus to fit..... pleaded 'early life failure' etc. Good news is - been fixed - item in stock which surprised service advisor - so maybe a more common problem than I thought?

Good will gesture by Carrs Truro - without re course to LR - they have paid for it - just waiting for me to collect.

Guess what... mine did exactly the same, on its first mot. Surprise... Carr’s had one in stock.
 Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

Great result but, 22,000 in 4 years = increased wear and tear.

Always worth getting the first MOT done a few weeks early. It would give the MOT renewal date of the reg date plus 4 years, not when it was done, and you got to say “it’s under warranty, fix it” if/when something fails. Thumbs Up

To be fair, being in stock is possibly a much lesser sign of it being a regular issue than “we”ll need to get a delivery date for you because we’ve got three of those on back order” Rolling Eyes

Over here in Holland it is not a MOT ( APK) failure because it is not safety related....

Despite Fatties not being a regular visitor to the small dealer that I use in North Devon, I’m normally surprised at just how many bits they hold in stock. It’s a far cry from taking the MINI in to the BMW dealer, where anything more complicated than oil and plugs would usually be quoted as taking “n days to arrive from Germany” Sad

I'm wondering if it's a testing failure rather than a component failure. place that does my MoT's told me they have had folks round from the MoT team telling them (unnecessarily ) how to test Disco front lower arm rear bush properly. "it is meant to move ... but should return to original place after being subjected to stress".

could that be case with this prop shaft bearing ?
 .

A little surprised by that - a case of 'use it or lose it'? - but I would have thought 'regular' use despite not high mileage would be OK?

Mildly interesting was a couple of comments made by the service advisor.... 'Not a common problem' (prop-shaft bearing - despite being in stock) - well they would say that .....etc

Main complaint from customers (allegedly) is disc pads and disc replacements - often caused by users leaving the vehicle standing, rust developing and grating causing 'excessive lipping on the discs'. I can identify with that - even when the car (any make) was used every day and had a lot more mileage than my current car after 4 years - I'm not convinced by this ..... its an 'earner'....!

Anyway - I digress - car picked up - just £50 odd to pay for MOT and 4 year service allegedly done.... must say feels a bit 'tighter' when accelerating ... no 'clunky surge' - or maybe that's just me?
