Montpellier to Calais Journey - August 2015

Looking to book the Le Shuttle crossing now hence advice needed. Already starting to get booked up it seems as some crossings are already full.

So in August next year we will be heading from Calais to the Vendee for two weeks camping and then heading on to near Montpellier for a wedding. Again for about another 4 - 5 days.

The Vendee journey is fine and we have done that numerous times through the night, I also think the journey from Vendee to Montpellier should be fine and another 6.5 hours or so further South. Though have heard it can be busy with traffic.

My worry is travelling from the South of France back to Calais with a trailer and two kids in the back. I know we will need to stay over night but was wondering if anyone has done this journey, how long it normally takes and any good suggestions for a stop over location for the way back ?

Ideally with secure parking as the trailer has a vinyl cover rather than a hard top. The journey back will be spread over the Friday and Saturday (bank holiday weekend) so a busy period I am guessing.

thanks James

Did long journeys a few years ago did cabo-roig Spain Montpelier and nice used do leave early in morning and do it in one(the last time i did Spain 24 hours door to door but would never do it again) it will take about 10-12 hours from south of France constant driving so if you got young ones may be better to split the journey we had tv screens which helped with the kids no end Shocked

I would think that you'll be fine over a couple of days to get back to Calais. We've often taken the caravan to the Med (beyond Montpellier) and got back after taking a leisurely drive with a couple of stop overs. When we're on holiday, we're on holiday, so I can't see the point of rushing - hence the two stops!

We have access to a house south of Beaune in Burgundy, and can get there from Calais comfortably in a day, and we've made the Med to the same area (with the caravan) easily in a day.

Sorry, just re-read your post, and see that you weren't really asking that!

thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. Two days does seem the only way to go.

re accommodation it takes us about 3 hours to put they tent up so definitely a hotel or similar !

We have an Outwell wolf lake 7 which is a great tent, just takes an age to pitch.

Busy is an understatement - however we will be doing it again on the Sunday of the bank holiday next year - this year the traffic was queueing back onto the A16 in the afternoon and it took 2 hours to get through passport control.

You need to make sure that you make your train time as waiting for availability could be horrendous - the previous year we missed ours by 30 minutes and had to wait from 5pm until midnight to get a train as we required the over height carriage due to bikes on the roof.
